Riding to the Airport (to fly somewhere)

Now that the airport connector is done, has anyone ridden it to actually fly somewhere? If so, how do you handle your bike when you arrive? Do they frown at you if you walk a bike into the terminal? Is there a secure place to store bikes for a few days, and if so, how much does it cost?

Any insight would be a big help.

i know this doesn't help, but they said they were going to put bike racks there in a secure place

I just led a ride out to the airport for which two of the riders decided discretion was the better part of valor and rode the 28x back. I don't think they had any trouble taking their bikes through the long walkway and terminal to get from the parking lot to the buses.

There are bike racks right at the farthest end of the walkway, which also serve as the terminus of the on-pavement bike markings through the parking lot.

are the racks under cover or exposed?

I also rode out there and only saw exposed racks.

there's so much open and relatively unused space in this airport. seems to me they could easily even dedicate a whole room or part of the short term parking deck with a security camera to just bike parking.

How about some bike lockers?

How about bike travel case rentals?

hmmm... too bad it probably wouldn't be a sustainable business model to rent some retail space and offer all of these services.

I'm going to try and ride through to SFO with my tikit this summer. We'll see how it goes.

If things don't change soon, it'll be easier to ride a bike to the airport than to take transit. Sad state of affairs, that.

I thought the same thing when I saw the 28X news. How're all those CMU kids going to get home for thanksgiving? Or to IKEA? (Does it still/again stop on Robinson? I've lost track.)

I think I read someplace that the 28X got a grant, and will continue for a while even if Harrisburg does nothing.

Yup, the 28X is back to serving IKEA, after the last round of cuts.

When I was a CMU student, back in the days before the 28X started, I usually used the Airport Limo bus from Oakland (taking PAT into Oakland when I wasn't living there). I think Yellow Cab ran it, and it served various hotels with a small fleet of minibuses. I assume if PAT goes away, Yellow Cab would be happy to handle the work (but their price will have more digits).

I learned at the ACTC meeting tonight that the 28X got more public comments than any other route, so it is likely going to be spared cuts come September.

28x drivers should be given the option to stop at stops on the busway, under some parameters. I have been passed by 3 packed G2's in a row, while 28x's sail by with a handful of people on. It's fking maddening. Stu, get on that.

While we’re talking about the airport…

…has anyone seen what the lock-up situation is there right now? Just an outdoor rack or something better?

3 weeks ago or so it was just a plain bike rack.

I dont' know if it is still true, but it used to be on the East Busway on a weekend, you would wait for a long time and be passed by 3 or 4 express buses with only 2 or 3 people on each of them before a standing-room-only articulated bus came by and stopped.

Made me feel like a hitchhiker (and I've hitchhiked over 50K miles)

The 28X is supposed to pick up on the busway when it's headed inbound, but not when it's headed to the airport. So report the driver's error to PAT if you were going toward the city.

I agree it would be nice if they'd pick up in both directions when it's not too crowded.

Actually, I know the 28X picks/ed up outbound on the Busway, because I have a friend who uses/d it daily to his job in Robinson from residences in Sheraden and Crafton for years.

Sorry, my error. The 28X is supposed to pick up at all West Busway stops it goes to, whether inbound or outbound, per the schedule. But it's not supposed to discharge passengers on the West Busway when heading outbound, only when inbound.

So if a 28X doesn't stop for you on the West Busway, please report it.

"The 28X is supposed to pick up at all West Busway stops it goes to, whether inbound or outbound, per the schedule. But it's not supposed to discharge passengers on the West Busway when heading outbound, only when inbound."

Therein is my problem - say I get on in Crafton in the morning, and go in to town. I can get on in town in the afternoon, but I can't get off where I got on in the morning, or any other outbound stop. I must wait for a G2. So very odd.

ACTC could use a few more transit geeks, just sayin'. I cycle off it after next year and they're kinda tired of hearing me talk, I think. Anyone out there who thinks transit and uses it regularly, especially if they are involved in another specialty (community group, seniors, steps dwellers, 2nd/3rd shift workers, refugee placements, released prisoners, architecture preservation, military vehicle maintenance, trainable MR, etc.), please PM me.
