Riverview Park

Mountain biking at Riverview — who does it? It's quite close to my house, so it'd be great if I could frequent the park for after-work rides, but I haven't had a lot of luck exploring on my own. I've ridden some okay singletrack in there, but haven't the slightest idea how to put the trails into a nicely flowing route. Anytime I've been walking in the park, I've seen some groups of cyclists coming through, so surely I'm missing something. Any good maps out there, or should I keep at the trial and error method until I figure everything out? Secondly, anyone know why many of the trails there feel so neglected compared to other city parks? Is it just the general lack of traffic that makes it less of a priority, or does it have to do with the park's ongoing native-species reforestation efforts? I'll reach out to Trail Pittsburgh as well, but I'd love to help out anyway I can if it means better riding close to home.

PORC rides there from time to time, but the individual who is most likely to be able to help you is Sean Brady. He also lives near the park, and rides it often. He is with the Hollow Oak Land Trust. You should be able to google out a current email for him.

It's tricky figuring out the flow to riverview. You have to utilize the multi use paths a bit to make connections and there is some undocumented stuff over by the park border with the cemetary as well. Its definitely worth the ride since its so close to downtown. However, it's definitely not as technical and refined as some of the other parks.

If you're in Riverview Park today and see a team of people working, wave. I'm likely one of them. My company is going on a conservation project as part of a company team-building effort. Something to get us out of the office, and more constructive than chasing around Kennywood (which we did one other time). I've never been off pavement in the park, so maybe I'll get to see some of these trails.

Michael, My friend Matt, who comments here occasionally, works for (if I recall the conversation correctly) a non-profit that is working on improving Riverview. Email me (jcm250b at juno dot com) and I will give you his contact information. I'm pretty sure he could advise you about what you could do to help improve the place.
