Ron Vahosky (cowchip) died

Very sad. I first met Ron last year when he volunteered, here on the bikepgh message board (using the pseudonym @cowchip), to do leaf-raking and cleanup of the Duck Hollow Trail. When he contacted me a couple months ago about cleanups of leaves and litter on the Steel Valley Trail, I encouraged him to come to a Steel Valley Trail Council meeting. Ron was active with cub scouts and with Allegheny Cleanways. Ron was a very generous, helpful, and energetic person. This is very sad! from the Post-Gazette, http://www.post-gazette.com/local/east/2015/04/23/Unresponsive-kayaker-pulled-from-Monongahela-River-in-Braddock/stories/201504230203 Kayaker dies after accident on Monongahela River in Braddock April 23, 2015 8:36 PM By Lexi Belculfine / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette A 46-year-old man from Munhall died after Pittsburgh River Rescue pulled him from the Monongahela River in Braddock on Thursday afternoon. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office said Ronald Vahosky died at 6:20 p.m. in the emergency room of UPMC Presbyterian. Emergency responders were called just before 5 p.m. to the Braddock public boat ramp on 11th Street, an Allegheny County emergency dispatch supervisor said. Braddock Mayor John Fetterman said River Rescue searched for the kayaker for about 45 minutes to an hour before finding him near the Rankin Bridge. He was separated from his life vest and kayak, which was found wedged under a coal barge. Personnel from River Rescue, a division of the city’s Emergency Medical Services, performed CPR on him before he was transported to the hospital, Mr. Fetterman said. --- Last year's cleanup thread: http://localhost/mb/topic/duck-hollow-clean-up/#post-291818 That's Ron in the orange jacket, and Ron Jr in the ATV. This makes me extremely sad! Cowchip came to the Viking-Biking ride in March with his sister and cousin. They had a great time, donated all sorts of goods to the Food Bank, and brought an insane amount of Eat & Park cookies and other stuff for the Potluck. Talking with them that day, Ron was so nice and very excited about riding a bike, meeting new people, and just being outdoors. Very sad for this :(

Ow. We rode together on a couple of rides, and he was very helpful with keeping invasive plants cut back along trails. Very easy to talk to. No words right now.

Breaks my heart. Just stoping in to post my condolences. It really hits me how much of a community we all are, when someone I barely know is lost to us... and my heart just sinks. My sympathy to the family if they happen to stumble upon this. Rest in peace, Ron. Thank you for all that you have done.

What would you all think of some sort of commemorative ride - or since it was important to Ron, how about a trail clean up session? Spend a few hours working on a section of trail in Ron's honor. Find out where he's buried and perhaps ride to the cemetery after?

I like SRPIT's idea - either of them.

A week ago, I made plans to do a leaf-raking and cleanup on the Steel Valley Trail near Kennywood on May 17. He liked the trails to be clear of debris. Anybody interested in helping with that? If so, as the date nears, I could set a time and place.

I like both ideas. It would also be nice to include the cub scouts in this too- both the clean up and maybe a short trail ride.

I'm already planning that for next year's Viking-Ride, we will dedicate it to Ron's memory. But for now, a cleaning & ride works. FYI Ron was interred today at St. Mary Magdalene Cemetery, Munhall.

The Steel Valley Trail seems appropriate for this. Unless 17 May won't work for most, then let's do it. I think inviting the scouts is fine. Meet at the pump house and ride out to the clean up site as a group perhaps? Paul, would you like to give us a good time to meet?
