Ross Township seeking people to join a new bike/ped committee

Ross Commissioner Jeremy Shaffer is seeking volunteers to serve on a committee to make the township a better place to walk, jog or ride a bicycle. He is seeking seven to 10 people to serve on the Ross Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee. Those who would like to serve on it should email a paragraph describing their interest, along with name, address and contact information, to Shaffer at commward8@ross.pa.us. The deadline for applying is Jan. 15. http://triblive.com/neighborhoods/yournorthhills/yournorthhillsmore/7398759-74/ross-committee-bicycle#axzz3Nxld7G6r

I should at least introduce myself, since I spend so much bike time on Ross roads.

@ stu (or anyone participating) Cranberry Twp. started down this path a few years ago (see http://localhost/mb/topic/cranberry-twp/#post-287604) Last year a few of us from the South Hills bike/ped committee went up there for a visit to see some of their changes. In particular, they managed to pass an ordinance that mandates sidewalks be installed in all new developments; that’s a huge step for a municipality. I think of Ross as being all sprawl like Cranberry, so it may be worth contacting them after the Ross committee gets its footing in order to steal some of their successful ideas.

The closer corollary is Millvale, whose bike-ped committee meets regularly, and is adjacent to Ross or nearly so. I know there are a few others on this board who actually live in Ross (I don't, though I'm barely 500 feet from the town line), so it would really be nice if some of them could participate. How exclusive is membership? The article does not say it is limited to Ross residents, so if non-residents can be considered, those of us in nearby McCandless, as well as West View, Shaler and Hampton, can be considered as well.

This is encouraging, how many of these adjacent local governments are embracing the needs of bike and pedestrian users which have been neglected for quite a while.
