Sweet. The language on that sign made my day - that is serious enthusiasm. Honestly, that feels better than bike racks. Not that bike racks aren't awesome! But infrastructure follows enthusiasm, and enthusiasm is contagious.

This is great! I directed my dad- who now lives in Virginia but used to commute to Gateway Center from Mt Lebanon- to this page, and he said that five years ago, Gateway told him that if he wanted to put his bike in the garage, he'd have to buy a parking spot.

"Who would ride their bike into town?"

Really? I can think of 5 people in my office of about 60, who ride at least occasionally (though there are probably no more than ten in the whole building). And I know of three in your building, besides you.

hell we have 5 or 6 in our office of about 30 people and at least a couple more in the building.

also this is an awesome change from the days when locking a bike up anywhere near any of the entrances to the gateway buildings was a pretty good way to get it confiscated by security guards with bolt cutters.

Everyone in my little office of 3 has rode at least once this year. The one now rides almost as much as I do.

sounds like in the past 5 years, somebody over there either retired or had a change of heart.

If they would just add some shower/locker facilities, then Gateway Center would be a "truly bicycle friendly office complex"!

Looks great! But someone will have to be a Debbie Downer and note that it's our collective least-favorite style of rack.

that is awesome! i wish those in charge where i work (a hospital/doctors office) would promote cycling to work. the bike rack there is IN the smoker's area though. really annoyed. i lock up in the parking garage along a fence with a large post on the end. i do see 2 other bikes there most of the time besides mine, but they don't work IN my office.

people i work with are AMAZED that i ride a whole 6-7 miles each way to work some days. i tell them that it's really not that difficult.

Here’s something to add to this thread.

An Aldi’s food store just opened a few weeks ago on McNeilly road in the South Hills. I went there and found that they didn’t have any bike racks. I emailed them a request for a rack. I just got a letter via regular mail from their Director of Real Estate:

“Regretfully, we do not have any plans for bicycle parking at the Baldwin Township Store, but will certainly consider your feedback in our site development planning, for new suburban and urban locations…”

Now the good part, “… our tentative land development plans for the (South Side) subject site do provide for 28 bicycle parking spaces on-site for our customers.”

Now I know the Pittsburgh ordinance where they can substitute bike parking for car parking probably has a lot to do with this, but 28 spots sounds awfully good. I just hope it’s not the crappy toaster-style racks. The letter was also CC’d to four other Aldi employees (unfortunately no titles were listed), so maybe some racks at their other stores will eventually happen too.

P.S. anyone at Bike-Pgh want her contact info?

I'm guessing 28 toaster-style bike parking spaces would translate in 4 spaces in real life.

Sure, send her contact info to us. We will approach them about standards. There are standards, by the way, in the City's bike rack zoning ordinance. Toaster will not fly.

I remember when that screensaver came out.

I just got back from a conference out of town and got the Gateway Center email. I replied back to thank them - it's a terrific addition for me as I was locking up outside every day.

You know, I walked by the Gulf Tower at 7th and Grant yesterday morning, and thought I was hallucinating. There is a bike rack there....INSIDE. One of the old store fronts on Grant Street on the opposite side of the door from Fifth Third Bank, seems to be a bike parking room with two Toast Rack style racks in it. There were two bikes in it. Toast style not the is not the best rack, but did I mention it's INSIDE? How cool is that? I wonder if it's a permanent change or only until they rent that space.
