cable locks don't work - they can be cut with hand tools in seconds. use a U-lock.

Stolen Bike - Trek Madone 4.5 Serial Number EN14781
I am posting this for a friend.
I bike 15 miles each way to work in downtown Pittsburgh and yesterday between 4 and
430 my bike was stolen from a parking garage in downtown. There were 2 locks on it
and it was locked right next to the security guard. The thief cut off both locks
while the security guard watched him. I thought parking it there would be safe
because I foolishly assumed the guard would say something if he saw someone stealing
a bike. He said the thief told him he lost his key...both locks were combination
though. Another bike was also stolen from the same spot that day.
My bike is a 2009 Trek Madone 4.5 cararra blue and white in a size 50 (picture
below). The serial number is EN14781. Also, I recently crashed my bike and the
tape on the left drop is cut all the way through and the left shifter is scratched.
I'm thinking the thief might try to get the drops re-taped before he unloads it (I
was planning on getting that done last night), so it doesn't look like it's been
crashed before, or take it to get cleaned up (I rode it home in the awful storm
Monday afternoon), or something of that sort.
I know this is a long shot, but I would very much appreciate if you would inform
your employees and if anyone sees it to please call the police and contact me (info
below). I have grown very attached to it over the thousands of miles we've traveled
together and would love to get it back.

Will you host the pictures somewhere like tinypic.com and then post them so we can get an idea? I cant imagine a higher end bike like that being easy to get rid of.

Hmm I def. saw a blue 4.5 yesterday in Southside Works at REI. I cant recall if it was black and blue or white and blue though.

That's rough, I hope you find it and I will keep an eye open for it.
If I ever turn into a commuter again I wouldn't use a good bike as much as I would prefer to however, my offices have always been bicycle friendly and I wheeled them in.

I was about to ask someone to remove the SN from the posting when I realized when the original posting occurred. Still. Is there any way we can have a filter that somehow deletes all attempts to post a serial number?? Should there be a "how to post a stolen bike thread" notice on the forums home?

Crashes are the other big cause of don't-post-that advice. Maybe there should be a pinned thread like "Read before posting about a crash or stolen bike", with advice on what to post (for stolen bike: type of lock, neighborhood, photo) or not to post for each.

EN14781 is a Trek model number, not a serial number. I doubt the bike on ebay is the one in question.
