bummer dude... best of luck
Stolen Specialized Langster, heart breaking
my beloved bicycle has been taken from me.
it was stolen tuesday night after midnight.
i live in bloomfield near penn ave. if everyone could keep their eyes out for i will love you all forever.
the bike is a 2004 model of the specialized langster in dark grey or gunmetal grey, the drop handlebars have really worn tape and the right side has been torn down to the metal, it has a white seat and heavy wear marks on the top tube and down tube where it would lean against something if locked up(only on the right side.
this bike is very important to me as its my only bike to ride and have been through a lot with it.
many people might know me as tim robes or tim mccarthy, please get in contact with me if anyone has any info.

You made a police report?
not to worry. timito is on it.
Someone, maybe a CMU student? or someone with some tech experience should make a little GPS tracker you could hide in your frame, figure out where these bikes are.
Wi-Fi Asset tags look promissing
an example

I'm sure they can be programmed to send out a beacon once or twice a day. Probably 99% of the alerts would be dropped due to closed Wi-Fi networks, but all you need is one or two to find an open network and you can narrow your search area down to a route or neighborhood.
Looks like GainSpan has some that last 10 years on a AA battery.

These exist. Called "wildlife tracking devices". Some enterprising individual could get a receiver unit and a bunch of tiny transmitters and set up a bike tracking service.
?
Already exists. There are a number of places that offer such services, even if I'm coming up blank right now. There was a guy at the Handmade Show that had one he was showing off.
That said, it seems like in Pittsburgh a much more low-tech solution is to use a lock and not get it stolen in the first place. Not being snarky, but it's easy to pass over the most obvious solutions to problems sometimes.
Chances are (most) of the people who have their bike stolen, happen because they didnt lock up or they locked up improperly. If you don't bother buying a lock or figuring out how to use one, I doubt you're going to invest in an electronic tracking service.
True, if your not gonna use a $30 lock, probably not gonna invest in a high tech anti-theft tracking device,
I just had one stolen a couple weeks ago, guess what, not locked up, duh
the handmade bike with the GPS tracker in it had a small portion of the downtube made of carbon fiber so the GPS could transmit... intense.
i have a GPS tracker that I use while sailing that is not quite small enough to use for this, but its close, it has a 30 day battery if left on 24/7, and puts out your position once every 10 minutes...the technology is out there.
I would love to have a tracking device that I could put in my guitar case. I'm surprized they don't have these - if you have one in, say, your TV, if your house gets cleaned out, chances are everything else will go the same place the TV does.
