Awesome!
Sunday Aug 14: Bikefest Pool Tour 2011
Early Warning!
Pool Tour has been scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday August 14th! Meet at 12:45 in Friendship Park.
Pool Tour route still being determined!
hooray!
YEAH!
I might also recruit my sister and her significant other and possibly other friends and family too!
thanks for the enthusiasm!
i want to try to get to bloomfield, polish hill, riverview park (brighton heights and fowler on the way?), the ppg fountain for REAL this year, maybe highland park for adult swim (it may not be on sundays?)....depending on recent weather the rope swing to end it... looking into a mt washington or carrick... but we will see. ill narrow it down, but i LOVE POOLS
Marmaduke Playground in Brighton Heights has a little spray fountain. Probably not worth the trip just to splash in a fountain, but is worth knowing about, if only because there are so few public water fountains in that part of town, and you really have to know where the place is in order to get to it. Marmaduke is just a block off the California/Benton corner.
ah, there is a little spray fountain and water fountain at the heths park baseball field.
It's supposed to thunderstorm on August 14th. August 13th looks to be a beautiful sun filled day. I think August 13th is a better choice.
no, it wont thunderstorm, i already made a special weather shrine to all the dieties.
Where's Alice Cullen when you need her?
anyone not going to this because you don't want to get into a swimsuit? PM me if you want my to make you one that's more flattering- things like non-shiny fabric, ruching and gathering, higher cut top, thicker straps, etc. Having something made from swim fabric is way more comfortable than swimming in a t-shirt over a suit you hate.
Let me know asap since I'm placing my swim fabric order this week. You pay for materials.
I'm interested & would gladly pay something for labor [edit: and creativity], too!
I'd gladly be spared the mutton-dressed-as-lamb wisecracks such as those foisted on the ladies of AE on another thread this morning.
I'll send an you email...
@Tabby: while I'm not concerned about a new swimsuit per se, I'd be interested in learning how to work with such fabric. Need an unskilled assistant?
sure, Dan an unskilled assistant sounds fun. Hilarity will ensue. Once I know what's going on we can arrange something. I'll also have to make room for you in my sewing cave.
I must say, not crazy about getting in a swimsuit. I could see one of those stripey Victorian one-piece man-suits. I would also need a significant handlebar moustache and a straw boater. That could work.
they make these, edmonds!

they have the hat too, but I don't know about the moustache. start grooming yours now!
Wow! Well there you go. At this point would need a faux stache.
The Steampunk Emporium is a dangerous place for me to go poking around with a credit card.
wow, i would love a handmade swim suit! i never even thought it could be a possibility!!!
No one could claim I wasn't wearing a helmet.
Note: Noticed in the news that Schenley Park pool and Magee pool in Greenfield are closed for an undisclosed time.
Other ideas: Ammon Rec Center on Bedford in the Hill District (could be a connecting route from East End to downtown and beyond) and jack Stack Pool off Benton, a hop skip and a jump (and several confusing miles by bicycle) from Riverview Park. I just like the name.
Went by Magee the other day and it looked like they finished the construction work and refilled the pool.
I was at Schenley on Sunday? and they were still cleaning it out.
order is getting placed tonight- reddan and Caitlin check your PMs
Passed Schenley Pool today and it's filled up again.
Passed Schenley Pool today and it's filled up again.
i am checking into routes and pools to visit, partially based on last year's experiences and visits!
so far, since ride starts at friendship park:
bloomfield
polish hill
ammon rec center
PPG fountain (curse you fountain for being off last year!)
then... head to some place up a huge hill like Jack Stack (brighton heights) or Ream (mt. washington)
or just head to south side's pool and enjoy it there because the head guard was so awesome last year (took over diving well, played sharks and minnows, cannonballs off the guard chair...) and then optional OTB visit for food
that's what I got so far. I am going to double check how many we got to last year though. I also really liked Schenley, personally.
Last year we made it to 5 pools, 3 fountains (one that was off) and one spray park.
im afraid im not comfortable taking a group to the rope swing or barge, so that may have to be an optional end of tour trip for some.
last night i had a dream that scott bricker bought a giant house with a pool and that the bikefest party was at this pool.
Have you seen the swimming pool room at the Bayernhof Museum? (O'Hara Twp). That'd be perfect!
I like the idea of Bikefest at the Bricker mansion.
I wonder if "reclusive billionaire Scott Bricker" has any caves under his mansion?
so this is the proposed pool tour as of now, though i think i may move 'jack stack' to 'ream', because that way for those who don't want to hill climb, we can take the incline with our bikes, something i have never done!
i am not 100% sure of the route yet... it will probably be
12:45 meet at friendship park
1:00 bloomfield pool
1:45 polish hill pool
2:30 ammon?
2:45 PPG fountain
3:45 jack stack or ream
4:30 water steps
5:15 south side pool
5:45 pools close!
eat at OTB?
last year we scrambled for some food as the pool tour ended because we were STARVING. bring snax this year everyone!
***PPG fountain would be moved up if we go to ammon in the hill, and water steps would not be visited if we don't go to jack stack in brighton heights.
As for the incline — it's been a while since I lived on Mt Washington and took the incline back and forth, but they were never too keen on more than one or two bikes at a time on the incline. Might want to check into that before leading a group to the base of the incline.
we would probably just go a few at a time... but do you have any input on riding to brighton heights? i havent done that and am unsure of how much hill it really is...
@Caitlin: There are several decent ways to get to Brighton Heights.
1) Brighton Rd out of the North Side until passing the light at Marshall, then left at Woodland and right on Shadeland (lets you skip the descent into and climb out of Woods Run)
2) California Ave all the way up is perfectly reasonable.
3) Ohio River Trail to end, then Eckert/McClure up the hill. Steepest, lowest traffic.
Sounds like another boat load of fun this year.
I'm sure y'all considered it, but any time to hit up the Highland Park pool? It's probably one of the nicest and biggest pools in the city, plus the sand volleyball courts could be our beach excursion for the day.
I also like Schenley, but the lifeguards, especially the main older gent, are pretty anti-fun, so might not be the bet stop for a bunch of fun-i-the-sun lovers.
truly, i was trying to take into consideration the anti-fun pools. schenley and, despite the three way slide, north side figured in!
i may take the brighton heights and ream options out... and go for hp pool instead...it just is sort of out of the way, but it is olympic reg sized and DOES have volleyball sand pits (i saw people searching for something of value in said sand pits for over an hour one day)
next year if i do it, id say meet at the highland park pool... but i already told the world friendship park this year.
also rev dom i wanted to make sure you got your lifeguard chair cannonballs in, hence south side pool visit
the volleyball pits are cool but beware they are infested with bees/wasps. they used to just be in the grass around the court but they are now living in the sand, if that makes any sense. many people from PSL have been stung this year, it's not bad enough to say "don't go there" (because i think you should) but be careful especially along the fence away from the pool.
Oh no! Rain and thunderstorms in the forecast for this afternoon! Does rain cancel? Will there be a raindate?
i am still planning to meet y'all at 12:45.... if it starts to pour rain and/or thundersstorm during the ride we will cut it short. also i told some people at the bikefest party that even if it is raining id meet at the meeting spot and we could get beers
Could make a last minute quick change and go for billiards and it would still be a "pool" ride
Arsenal lanes....great billiards/pool in the heart of Lawrenceville.
Wonderful ride! Three pools and a fountain, with a built-in lunch break. Let's see, we hit Bloomfield, Polish Hill, the PPG fountain, and Riverview. Then got chased out by a thunderstorm that never materialized. I parted ways after Riverview, intending to do the Bat Ride, but ended up going home.
...and there were not 1 but 2 underwater cameras! Here are the pics from mine:

thanks to everyone who came out for an awesome ride! Despite the overcast day we still ruled the pools with 20ish people. Way to be champs riding up to riverview... Riverview Park Pool = A+++ would ride to again.
We will try to do a winter ride again this year

Dave, I would have totally recognized you if you did the eye thing like in your profile
