Tag-o-Rama 5

The Tag-O-Rama game started in September 2010, and periodically needs a new thread, due to message board issues. This is thread five. Here are threads one, two, three, and four. The rules are easy (although wordy, it is not hard to play) #1 – Find the tag and get a picture of your bike in the same location (as best as possible). The first person to post a found tag gets to place the next tag. If you get a tag, but somebody else posts their picture first, you lose – you’ve been Bruced. #2 – Take the tag to a new location, shoot a photo with your bike in the picture, and post it here. Keep the tag within Pittsburgh city limits and the surrounding neighborhoods. Give a few hints (or a short poem if you’re so inclined) so the next person can figure out where the tag is located. Try to place the tags in interesting locations, somewhere historic, etc. Remember, the point of the game is not to make the clues difficult to figure out. It is about riding, not Googling. #2a – After you pick up a Tag, a new tag must be placed within 36 hours. If the new tag is not set within the time limit, the first Bruced posted gets the tag. If no Bruce was claimed, tag will revert to the previous tag, and somebody else will get their chance. If you won’t have the time to drop off a new tag, don’t pick it up to begin with. #2b – This rule is intended to keep the game moving. If the overdue tag is posted before somebody grabs the reverted tag, then the new tag will stand. However, giving the overdue tag-holder a load of crap is highly encouraged. #3 – Tag must be findable – don’t make your tag so obscure that no one will find it. Make sure to let folks know what riding conditions are involved to get to your tag. #4 – File photos are NOT permitted. You may not use a photo taken before the current tag was set to prove you found that tag, nor use a photo taken before you photographed the current tag to set a new tag. #5 – All images of tags that are posted, whether picking up or setting a new tag, MUST include the bike you rode to the tag. If your bike isn’t in the posted image, you don’t have a tag. #6 The bicycle in the picture must get to the tag location under the player’s own pedal-power. #7 – No whining. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . UPLOADING IMAGES How to Post Photos In case you’re looking for the photo upload button that was once on this site, sorry it has disappeared. For those of us who want to know more about the record keeping functions of Tag-o-Rama … To add a marker to the Google Tag Map, sign in to Google, go to the map, and click the Edit link on the left. Then click the marker icon in the upper middle. Then click where the marker should go. See one of the previous threads for examples of game play.

Please forgive this slight tangent, but I was playing around with Steven's spreadsheet (thanks for ALL of your record keeping & mapping!) because I was interested in how many people are playing the game over time. I had the feeling that more people were playing back in the olden days and that only a handful are playing now. So here's a graph of what I found: Players per month http://i.imgur.com/vp33Xxj.jpg The data's not perfect since I treated group pick ups as their own player, but it does show a drop off in players over time - but we still have between four and eight players each month. And here's the number of Tags over time http://i.imgur.com/aMlR5rw.jpg

That pretty much puts the kibosh on the "this game is going to hell" theme. Things have been pretty consistent for 3 or 4 years. Even a slight upswing in the last year. BTW, the original Tag-o-Rama game, the motorcycle game in Ohio, is still going strong on one thread. Computers are amazing.

This game is not my thing; I didn't have the time to play even when my own property was a tag. That said, I have a few tag suggestions for anyone who wants to venture up 18th Street to the hilltop neighborhoods: 1) The upper end of the former Knoxville incline; 2) The new Black Forge coffee shop on Arlington Ave; 3) The piece of artillery in the cemetary across from the old Dairy Queen in Carrick; 4) The new catering place on Warrington, called Sweet Peaches. 5) The italian restaurant on Warrington; 6) Some custom bike racks that Dan B. and I built, which are in front of a shared working space/business incubator on Warrington; 7) Various other cemetaries up in that area; 8) The plaque commemorating where three workers were killed when the old printing press on Allen Street collapsed during a snowstorm in the 1990s. It is now a parking lot for sugggestion #5. 9) The Japanese-style entryway to a home next to the old Knoxville High School. Maybe this will help get the game into some new areas.

The Hallmark Mother's Day may have passed. But on this coming weekend, I conjecture, some mothers look forward to a reward for their years of selfless sacrifice. Or so I thought. Maybe this tag is a mother. In search of its spouse, for a meal. Like I said, be careful. [Just tossing a pellet of clue into the limpid waters of the Koi pond of Tag... watching ripples spread peacefully to the edges. Perhaps one of which is you.]

Hi, I checked in to offer a couple of comments on Marko's evaluation of game players and tags. I tried to play early on in the game, but since I live in the north/western quadrant of the "box" most of the tags were too far away for me to even consider getting, given that most players lived or worked in the more heavily tagged eastern portions of the box. Even after I stopped playing, I would continue to check in, to learn more about this awesome city. I rarely even stop in any more. Too many tags are too obscure for my limited range of movement/regional familiarity. I am thrilled that the game continues for the rest of you. It was fun. But, I worry that with the continuing sophistication and/or obscurity of the clues, will new participants be able to get their wheel in the door?

Railroad St past 32nd St, Strip District. https://twitter.com/bus15237/status/732348296509947905 Photo taken with my helmet cam because I left my cell at the office. Because of that, I couldn't get online to line up the exact pose as the tag drop, but I'm pretty sure this is the same spot. Same bridge in the background, same tracks.
stuinmccandless
2016-05-16 18:14:39
What do others think: is Stu's picture of the railroad tracks and the bridge a tag pickup? I see bent tracks versus straight tracks, steel bridge support versus concrete abutment, trees versus no trees.

I'm pretty sure those are the wrong tracks, though the correct tracks are not far away. So it doesn't look to me like a good pickup.
steven
2016-05-17 08:35:46
Well, here's the problem. If you have a camera but not a cell phone, how are you supposed to tell when you're in the right spot? I figured out which bridge it was, as noted by the thin railing or fencing on top of the bridge, and I remembered there was some sort of grade crossing or very high gravel level between the tracks. I tried a spot the other side of the bridge but came back to this one because it showed the crossing and the bridge. I wasn't about to bike 22 blocks back downtown to get the cell phone when I had a perfectly operable camera on me. To require being in the exact spot means you need fully operable mobile Internet service, which I didn't have myself for the first almost four years of the game. Back then, after figuring out a tag, I had to drag my laptop with me along with my old flip phone, hope I remembered to bring the connector cord with me, take a photo as best as I remembered it, then chase off to a library or coffee shop or my office, whichever was closest, get online, upload the picture to the PC, then to Flickr, then putz around with the URL to embed it in a post here. I did that from the start of the game until August 2013. Being in the exact spot was less an issue for 10-foot-high "@" signs or Snoopy doghouses or anchors than for 70-feet-high bridges. Last night, after figuring out I didn't have the cell, I snapped the photo with the helmet cam, biked back to my office (where the cell was sitting on my desk where I left it), plugged in the helmet cam, sent a tweet from there, then linked it in a post. The tag drop was easier, since I had the cell in my hand. So, really, you're going to say we have to memorize the exact spot before getting a tag? Define exact. Note also that the helmet cam has a much wider field of view than does the cell.
stuinmccandless
2016-05-17 09:36:24
Not the same set of tracks but very close. It was indeed on 32nd st. I think in the spirit of the game the Stu's new tag should be accepted. Im not sure having to bike back to go an extra 100 yards adds much to the game
kieran
2016-05-17 10:32:21
Kieran's call, I think, so it's a good pickup. But Kieran, your tag was on 33rd, right, not 32nd? From Streetview, it looks like your tag was just northeast of 33rd, on the tracks right next to the river, and looking SSW toward the 31st Street Bridge in the distance. You were roughly behind this truck. That's about 700 feet from Stu's pickup, which is looking NNE toward the same 33rd street railroad trestle, but from the opposite side. No 31st Street Bridge, since he's pointing the opposite way. So, really, you’re going to say we have to memorize the exact spot before getting a tag? Define exact. I'd think being at 32nd instead of 33rd and Railroad instead of the river, and looking in the wrong direction, would usually not be exact enough, but Kieran is clearly nicer than me. :-)

Yups. The dark backside of Allegory Genital Horspital. Sadly, all my photos of my new tag came out horribly. This is the best I got. That unidentifiable blob in the foreground is my saddle nose, BION. Although there are several ways to get from the south pole to the north pole, there’s only one official way. But by thinking a mile and a half outside of the box, I didn’t have to use the airport to find the shortest flight from pole to pole. This image probably admits of two different solutions; show me one with lots of flowers... or both solutions!

If you want to find this you can do it today Just seek out the advice of Jake McCrea
jonawebb
2016-05-24 17:35:51
Unpacking this a bit: * Definitely a building that had to have existed pre-1960, when those fallout shelter signs went up * Probably also a building that existed in the 1930s or earlier, when sidewalk access elevators were installed in a lot of commercial buildings * In general, a business district that was built up enough pre-1930 to warrant having sidewalk access elevators, and there aren't many: downtown, SSide, Oakland, East Liberty, Squirrel Hill, maybe bits of Bloomfield, Shadyside, even Beechview or Wilkinsburg. Most of the old North Side (a.k.a. Allegheny) business district is gone, and what's left isn't likely to have a six-bike permanent rack. I've made several passes through bits of downtown I don't frequent, and I haven't found it. McCrea's office is in Steel Tower, which does not fit the asterisk points above.

A little while ago some folks posted here noting that maybe tags should show up in some new neighborhoods. A couple were suggested. This tag picks up on one of those suggestions. It's on what I think of as a pretty well traveled bike route; a couple of riders even passed by while I was there. I try to set my tags in public places, preferably ones that regular bikers might pass and not hidden from the street. But of course it's up to you to look around. This one is adjacent to a stop light; you may even have stood there at some point. Would it help for you to know that our boy-o didn't make it to the U.S. Naval Academy either? And, sadly, he missed out on the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Maybe life is cruel after all. Does anyone know where this is yet? If not I'll keep hinting.

"I can’t say if Johno is still around or whether the property is just sitting there, part of the slowly vanishing Old Pittsburgh." As fas as I know he is still in business; we got a print of one of his paintings as a Christmas gift maybe 2 years ago - it was the painting of the group of road bikes traveling in a pack through the South Side.

I like tags with clues, myself. It seems unfair to people who are less familiar with the area to not include a clue. At least they have a chance if there's something they can Google etc. And you're supposed to provide a clue, by the rules.

During my search for a solution to this problem, I found that Google+ and Flickr and image-sharing sites, not image-hosting sites. That's why they're making it so hard to do what we want. There are free image hosting sites, though. So we can just use them instead.
jonawebb
2016-07-04 16:38:58
I guess it's to be expected that our friendly platform providers would want to force themselves into the loop when we post images, even as they wish us to labor under impression that these belong to us. argle-bargle... feh [ I googled @jonawebb's img posting website; mostly I found posts complaining about viruses and NSFW images. I assume that these reference sketchy bait-posts and not prima-facie legit posts, as say by people on this board. Then again, the About or FAQ doesn't explain the business model. Be careful out there... ] [mea culpa: I skipped the important step of moving my image to a "public" album before posting the url. In google, the url changes when you do that. So you have to do it before you share the image url. (And on a related topic, I should of course be posting pick-ups in the field; but I prefer to post everything from a desktop, despite the occasional brucing.) ]

stuinmccandless
2016-07-09 20:59:21
On reflection... If someone picks up a tag then declares that they can't/won't set the follow-on this should not count as a reset of the existing tag. At that point the world is different: The location has been identified, and the point of the exercise is moot. Specifically all that matters to "win" is reading the mb/ at an opportune time and having the time (and proximity) to get to the location. That's not the Game: it's leveraging internet randomness. I would rather the original finder get credit, and the original setter have the option to propose a new tag (perhaps set at, or around, the time of the original or thereafter, but not contingent on the triggering condition). For context: At some point in this game I luckily picked up a tag. But before getting to my destination tag, I had the misfortune of crashing (and ended up in a hospital). The Game noticed that a new tag had not been set. Someone stepped in and the Game went on. That's an extenuating circumstance. The current case isn't. So: don't just give up a tag. Let the clock run out. Maybe you'll discover that you did have the time (more or less). Or, you get the opportunity to set a tag outside the "inner" rectangle/polygon. To the benefit of the Game. [Dan: It's not personal. Just me being willfully abstruse.]
ahlir
2016-07-10 17:40:19
@Ahlir If you're talking to me, it's Dan, not Don. Nothing personal taken. The willingly abstruse thing kinda says it all to me. So I have this cool tag ( I think, anyhow). Should I post away or are you asking to have the opportunity to reset the tag?

I'm OK with multiple photos. With this tag, though, I'm more concerned with it being inaccessible. I don't think it's Randyland, but my hunch is that like Randyland, it's not something you can easily see from the street or some other public spot. I'm OK with "No Outlet" streets, anything along a trail, fountains in parks, little streetside gardens and the like. Just making sure it isn't private property.
stuinmccandless
2016-07-11 08:03:26
It's 3 photos, all taken within minutes of each other, in various parts of the same location. The top photo has my bike against a railing with the background of the pond. It's a public place and it can be photographed from the "outside" (albeit a little tougher to see) as well as inside the garden.

Anyway, I had trouble formulating the clue the way I wanted. I still can't quite get there, so here's the best I can manage so far: A hexagonal base, at the pentagonal center, in a square of triangular shape. [re the pickup: Those cars belong to people attending the church (after all, it's Sunday morning). They have a great solution to the parking problem (3 lanes: everyone arrives, and leaves, at the same time). The Crockett markings are on what looks like a hall or maybe school. If it's the latter it would imply a Catholic congregation. But the spires are all wrong. Anyway, it doesn't much matter. ] Why do TV writers feel they need to make hicks sound like, well, hicks?

Restaurant Depot is a cool place (especially the refrigerated section). Of course you should be able to use stuff in the quantities that they carry. For example, you can get 1lb of (Canadian) yeast for $1-2, as opposed to $4.95 for an ounce at your (allegedly) friendly Whole Foods. Make daily bread? They have a nice selection of flours. Note that you need a PA business tax number to shop there. They check.

2016-10-10 10:10:04
If the 10:10 post was supposed to have a photo, I cannot see it. That said, it would be helpful if a photo could be posted that shows a little more of the tag. Between the "New Tag" block and the bikes, and the amount it's zoomed in, there isn't that much I can see of it. I understand the 10:10 post to mean that this is a very new mural, somewhere, probably so new the paint is hardly dry on it, which makes it all the more necessary to show more than about a two-foot square.
stuinmccandless
2016-10-10 10:52:28
The 10:10 post is a clue. And the tag is on a heavily traveled route. And while the mural is new, the clue refers to something else distinct about the tag.

@dberlin, congrats. So far as posting the link goes, it's easier on the desktop than on a phone. Since the message board update I always have to monkey around with things to get it to work. But the key thing is to get a link to the actual image (usually a URL that ends with ".jpg"). This is sometimes hard or impossible to do with one of the image sharing apps on a phone; using a browser and going to the app website works better. Once you're there, you can usually get an image link by long-pressing and choosing something like "Copy image address". Then, once you've got that, either type in "less than sign" img src="your link goes here" "right slash" "greater than sign" or use the "IMG" link at the top of the page to do the same thing. Sometimes you'll get a broken link when you do that. It means the image sharing site is blocking the access from the BikePgh website. Probably because they want to get people to access their website.
jonawebb
2016-10-12 12:51:22
As far as I can tell, the phone upload doesn't work. I've recently lost a tag thinking it was uploading (screen showed upload activity), but it didn't upload. The upload wouldn't work from my desktop this morning either, though occasionally it has worked. I use flickr or my own websites for images. New is New, VanGogh Museum is in Amsterdam.

I have a pretty good idea where this is. IIRC, it might be quite smelly a half mile in the direction you're looking. Correct? And if it is where I think it is, the most direct way there is suicidal, but there's a much nicer parallel road a half mile away and 200 vertical feet higher up the slope.

A long time ago someone sent in a letter to Dear Abby (does anyone remember that perennial column in the daily papers, back when they were actually on paper?) asking the age-old (trick) question "why is it that the thing I'm looking for is always in the last place that I look?" To my consternation, Abby took the question seriously and published what I remember being an earnest answer. I did a ½-hearted web search for it just now but no luck. So here's the deeper question: @ph found what looks like (to me) the right marker on his 4th try. Can we safely assume that he found all of them? or is there perhaps a 5th one, somewhere? Perhaps in a warehouse; in a box of backup replacements or ones held in reserve for the day when all six banks rightfully have their bike trails and we have finally declared victory? Or maybe today, on some lonely spot on the south shore of the Allegheny or Ohio? Mysteries of Pittsburgh... But seriously. That was an awesome saga of tag + pickups.

Thanks for the coordinates! Map's updated. FWIW, Google says that point is 2.3 miles from the fountain, as the crow flies, or 3.1 miles routing via the trail. I wonder how they figured 2.5 miles.
steven
2016-11-13 02:48:33
On the Southside part of the trail, if you are at the 0.0 mile marker and you turn your head to the left, the point is directly across the Mon. So, they draw an imaginary line across each river from the point and mark that 0.0. Of course, you could get super technical about how the line is drawn, but someone made that decision a long time ago.  My guess is that it is a due N-S line as the point is pretty much pointing due W.

I'm glad someone has been doing their homework. hint: was RC, now original COG
paulheckbert
2016-11-17 21:47:50
Thank you for the hint. This country never ceases to amaze me for its variety of religions. Where I grew up there was Catholic and Protestant. The latter was some mix of established denominations, mostly with roots in the UK. I was slotted into the Catholic partition so never really had cause to pay attention to the other ones. In this country it seems like anyone with enough rent money can start their own church and build a congregation around it. Exceptionalism at maybe its best. The red door implies Anglican, but I'm guessing that's not what we have here (unless the Pentecostals are also into color signifiers; sorry I don't follow this stuff that closely). [Bear with me...] A number of years ago I was in Bonn, outside a church in the evening, with a choir inside singing in a truly heavenly way and people streaming in. The church looked catholic, which didn't seem right. I asked a passerby if this was a catholic church. No, he said, it's lutheran. But the architecture is catholic, I said. Yes, he replied, we took over their buildings when we threw them out.

I had no idea this would be so difficult. I've spent hours biking all over (Millvale, Stowe, McKees Rocks, SSide, NSide, Bloomfield), searching databases of church buildings, and pawing through StreetView. Still nothing. I probably biked right past it and didn't notice; it wouldn't be the first time I did that. COG=Church of God, probably also includes Church of God in Christ, but that hasn't turned up anything, either. I'm not giving up, but I gotta go work on something else.

re the previous tag... I've been in Pittsburgh for a long time, back when this place really was known as Herr's Island. Filled with Pittsburgh's rendering plants. Actually they had been shut down by the time I got around to biking there. But it was a totally surreal experience. Like when I peered into a tank next to the river that had been used to store rendered fat (waiting, I imagined, for its trip to some soap factory down the Ohio). The tank had had been neatly scraped with shovels, to get as much out as possible. No waste, even at the end. And then there was the main building. It felt too creepy to explore (back then I was still young and impressionable). But I do remember these ramps leading down to what I imagined were the delivery docks, where day after day left-over animal parts (and maybe an occasional gangster) were dumped into vats for simmering. So when this tag came up I wondered. Was that wall a part of that very same plant? (It would be the north wall, maybe; the ramps were on the south.) From a time when even base industrial architecture included some bit of ornament, irrespective of its purpose.

I found this. Looks like that part of the island is the "southern" end. It was heavily contaminated with toxic crap from some sort of salvage operation. The tennis courts are on top of all the encapsulated toxic waste. So most likely that wall, if it was left over, is from the salvage plant. From the marina on down is the central and northern part of the island. That was the Western Packing plant. They took all the leftover organics and dumped it into a landfill. Looks like that ended up in the URAs hands in the late 70s.   washington's landing (herr's island) - Carnegie Mellon University https://www.cmu.edu/steinbrenner/brownfields/Case%2520Studies/pdf/washingtonslanding1herrs%2520island.pdf

Getting to my tag is quite simple. Come up to the traffic light at the river end of Grant Avenue, then turn right. Go past the first building and veer right into a parking lot. There's a dumpster in the back. I took my photo just to the right of that dumpster. Paul's is a couple feet to the right, looking more downstream than across. As to clues, it's obviously on the Millvale end of the river trail, the railroad track is just the other side of the big intersection, the church with the Maxo Vanka murals is directly behind you, and of course, Logan Street is mere yards away.

The shadows don't tell you location, but if you know the photo's taken in late afternoon and you see the sun is grazing the wall, from the right, you know the sun's in the west and you're looking south so you're probably on a street that runs roughly east-west. It's possible to get more quantitative if you know or can guess the time more precisely. There are tools to help with this: https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/grad/solcalc/ . Think sundial...
paulheckbert

Eden Way is actually a bit closer to north-south than east-west (around 42 degrees from north). Seems like one might need to get slightly more quantitative with this method in order to have more than zero significant digits. :-)

2016-12-27 19:20:02
Penn and Fifth start out pretty close in downtown. Fifth more or less wanders straight east. Penn loops north, east, the curls southwards, intersects Fifth and keeps going on to Wilkinsburg. Penn has already arced out wider by the time they intersect, and then it keeps going to the Wilkinsburg line. The Wikipedia article simply calls Fifth "one of the longest". Maybe, but so what? It's just the interweb. Call up a map and see for yourself. Or fire up Endomondo or whatnot and trace out the routes.

Sorry, typo above. The correct name is Sakyamuni Buddha Temple. As you can see in the photo, Buddha is pleased to have a dollop of snow in his face. They've got some other nice sculptures there. In case you're unfamiliar with the vertical-striped flag, that's the buddhist flag: The six colours of the flag represent the colours of the aura that emanated from the body of the Buddha when He attained Enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. The horizontal stripes represent the races of the world living in harmony and the vertical stripes represent eternal world peace. The colours symbolise the perfection of Buddhahood and the Dharma. The Blue light that radiated from the Buddha's hair symbolises the spirit of Universal Compassion for all beings. The Yellow light that radiated from the Buddha's epidermis symbolises the Middle Way which avoids all extremes and brings balance and liberation. The Red light that radiated from the Buddha's flesh symbolises the blessings that the practice of the Buddha's Teaching brings. The White light that radiated from the Buddha's bones and teeth symbolises the purity of the Buddha's Teaching and the liberation it brings. The Orange light that radiated from the Buddha's palms, heels and lips symbolises the unshakable Wisdom of the Buddha's Teaching. The Combination Colour symbolises the universality of the Truth of the Buddha's Teaching. https://flic.kr/p/PJpGp7

I've wondered, occasionally, whether the people shown were parishioners at the time the church was demolished to make way for an (ugly) office building. (Which my wife also worked in, for a while.) I do sort of hope they're those parishioners, a snapshot in time. It would have made sense for it to be a part of the sales agreement. (Yes, I could have googled around for the actual story, but I didn't.) Apart from that, all that's left is the tower: non-tag... I had to take a ride around the block before I could snap this. Scott is an amazingly cool person. I first met him back when he was selling hot dogs in front of the Hillman Library. Later I got to know him as the guy running this place (a former gas station). If you go by there you always notice something interesting. Sure, it's a dump. But it doesn't mean that a keen mind isn't always adding things, rearranging stuff, continually engaging with his world. I've been buying xmas trees from him for a few years. He gets nice ones and sells them at a reasonable price. Every time, he asks me where I'm from. "Squirrel Hill" I'll say and he'd reply "Yeah but where are you *really* from". So I end up having to tell him I moved from Montreal. And then he insists I teach him something in French; "how do I say _____?". Which I do, even working on the pronunciation. He'll get it. Still need to go by and move the pail back one notch to the right.

You would likely have passed it a 1000 times; it's been there a good while. I'm not sure I've seen it open in the past couple of years, though. Maybe someone who frequents the night life on the strip could tell us. As near as I could tell they were mostly open at night, catering to the partiers. The Strip, as far as know, is the one 24h-ish district in Pittsburgh: different sets of people moving through, around the clock, doing different things. In Pittsburgh, the Culver City of South-Western Pennsylvania, you will come across many strange sights (sites?). This tag features the Adairsville Police Station. Teleported, somehow, from north-western Georgia. Googling "Adairsville Pittsburgh" doesn't come up with anything obvious, at least not on the first page. It makes me confident that Adairsville is not one of our neighborhoods. But I have to admit that it did make me wonder while I was standing there: Maybe it was one of the 90? Or perhaps the lost 91st? I can tell you that the building is public, not sectarian. Maybe the reflection in the glass is helpful (no, not of the guy on the left). The cans on the radiator are cat food. When you do your pickup, please ask what that's about. It's kind of, weird.

I think if they're obliged to eat cat food, they're probably just extras. (Unless the actors are in fact cats. Are they filming the new season of CSI: Cat Police there?)

Actually, the extras get fed really well. They get the same grub as the skilled/highly paid actors. I've worked on a few sets and it's nothing but shrimp, steak and soymilk lattes out the wazoo. Granted, the important people get to be first in line. They ain't touching food after some background actor's been breathing on it! It's the only benefit, the rest of they time you're treated like cattle.

it has pictures of things that are inside the rectangle. I know where this is and it is near other tags that have been posted over the last 3-4 months and also near an active location of discussion in other threads that many people have checked out or regularly bike. But what again constitutes the official rectangle? Pinned posts would be great (i.e., one with the rules), but we don't have that feature.
edronline
2017-03-24 07:13:51
The link to the rectangle is on page 1 of this thread, and its four predecessors. We've had a few tags outside the box; I set one myself once. Looks like this one is just off a diagonal, and not by much. From another thread, there's a bike related meeting this Sunday in that same part of town, so I'm not going to squawk about this one too much. It's just a long ways from my house, a most-of-a-day excursion just to get out there.
stuinmccandless
2017-03-24 07:46:56
The rectangle shows the bounds of (some version of) the Bike Pittsburgh map. The rules don't require keeping tags inside that rectangle, only "within Pittsburgh city limits and the surrounding neighborhoods", which is kind of vague. Is the rectangle helpful, now that the map shows 1200+ tags? Or are the tags themselves all we need to provide a sufficient "try to pick a tag somewhere in this general area" hint to new taggers, which I think was the point of the original rectangle?
steven
2017-03-24 08:49:19
If you click the rectangle on the Google map of the tags it says that the tags can be a bit outside of the rectangle. I'd vote to keep it as is.

Flavors, a café in Garfield, Kinkaid at N. Atlantic. Under wrap is a locomotive. loc: 40.466560, -79.938143 During the summer this place seems pretty popular with the locals, but I haven't had a chance to try it. Beyond that, "upper" Garfield is interesting; check it out if you can. Further up the hill is a farm and there's a nice school. The area seems in a stage of pre-gentrification; urban types are moving in and are renovating. Could be hot. Buy now. But seriously, it's one of those really nice out-of-the-way corners of Pittsburgh. Getting there from the north or east is funner. Today I took Colombo up from Negley.

Sennot & Bouquet, Oakland I did not presume to lean my bike up against the Benz. But I confess I wanted to. It's a parking lot with a friendly attendant. He cheerfully let me enter the property, later he told me that the shoe company had moved to the South Side. I looked them up: they were acquired by Amazon (owner of Zappos). Coincidentally (or not) Amazon's Pittsburgh lab was first located in that building, before they moved to the SSide. I'm not so sure any of the equations make much sense. But that's probably me and my dated math skillz. Heck, I never managed to sell my startup to Amazon. And, uh, I guess I don't even have a startup...

This reminds me of a sculpture park west of Budapest, full of Communist era artifacts. When the regime changed, popular sentiment was to simply destroy all reminders of the past. But someone had the the prescience to instead have them carted out to a field out in the country and set up in rows. I once got to visit the place. It was an amazing experience; our hosts, for the only time I was there, actually opened up and talked about how it was in the old days. Hopefully Orbán knows enough to not starting to put up statues to himself... Of course, we have our own problems.

Griffis Sculpture Park, about 40 miles south of Buffalo NY, is a wondrous sight to behold. Too bad it's so far out in the countryside, off a gravel road. Point being, assemblages of big iron sculptures take on a life of their own, with value greater than the sum of its parts.

I looked around on Duquesne Light's website to see if there was any public way of identifying locations by pole number, but didn't see one. Meanwhile, I am mentally traveling through the area, thinking of right-angle turns like this. Is this on the edge of a park or ravine?

I can't tell what that greenish/blue thing is in the background.  looks like it may be on a pole on the other street and may be a sign.  But I can't tell -- too small. I took his clue literally and found a Small Street in Crafton Heights, but Google streetview doesn't match up with the picture at all.  Totally different neighborhood. Ditto with Little Street in that Pittsburgh neighborhood down by Homestead.

I'd give you more clueage, but even if you knew nothing about the city, everything you could possibly need is literally right there in front of you. I guess I'll answer the questions tho.
    • I too have been wondering for a while about identifying tags by telephone pole numbers. If you find a public database, please let me know! ;^)
    • Yes, this is near a park or ravine.
    • That blue/green thing way back is the side of a house that burned quite recently. Might be worth a peek while you're there, if you're into that sort of thing.
    • Streetview should match up quite well. Except for the burned house, that is.

Wilksboro and Stonelea is correct. From Tribune-Review article http://triblive.com/news/allegheny/5597217-74/bridge-north-residents The city in 2007 closed the Wilksboro Avenue footbridge, a Victorian-era walkway stretching nearly 400 feet over a Brighton Heights gorge, because of structural deficiencies, according to a city engineer's report. ...   Neighbors consider the Wilksboro Bridge, built around 1895 when people walked or caught streetcars to work, a special asset. The bridge permitted residents from a western section of Brighton Heights to cross the ravine and catch streetcars on California Avenue. ... City Councilwoman Darlene Harris of Spring Garden, whose district includes Brighton Heights, said she's earmarked $420,000 in the capital budget to repair the Wilksboro bridge and advocated for federal highway money to rebuild the Davis bridge. City engineers estimated in 2007 it would cost $700,000 to $800,000 for a total rehabilitation of the Wilksboro span. In my opinion they should give the rehab project to some high school students and let them work on it for a few years until they get it done.
    paulheckbert
    2017-05-23 22:31:24
Just throwing this out there: if BikePgh reached out to Darlene Harris and tried to help get Federal funding for this bridge rehab, that would be a good way to show that they're interested in helping people all across the city improve their non-motorized transport infrastructure, and that they don't hold a grudge. And maybe she would be willing to consider incorporating bikes into the rehab, if it happens. In any case it might help show people in Spring Garden that BikePgh is not an elitist organization that only cars about bicyclists Downtown and in the East End.

I made a quick and dirty tool to make it easier for me (and you) to post Flickr-hosted photos in T-o-R, without the forum's dreaded penchant for cropping photos. I know some other folks here use Flickr, so I figured I'd share. Say you're chasing a tag. You take your picture and upload it to Flickr. Then how do you get that into a forum post? Now you can go here and enter your Flickr account's username. The program then looks at your Flickr feed and finds your most recently uploaded photo. It presents you with two resized thumbnails of that photo. One is max 500 pixels wide, which is just right for posting on this forum without cropping. The other is max 320 pixels wide, for when you want something smaller. With each image, you're given code you can copy and paste straight into a forum post that'll display the thumbnail image, with a link so that viewers can click thru to see the original (presumably larger) image. This is just a first pass, so it might be buggy and could probably be enhanced. But I wanted to get something functional out there, so that I can start claiming tags in the field, rather than biking back home to my HTML editor. If you use it, let me know how it works for you.

^Hmmmm, I use flickr and all I ever do is take the shot, go to my camera roll  (the part that shows the thumbnails) and pick the image. Once i pick the image, my app displays the typical share icon among a few others. I chose the share icon and a list of options comes up. One option is "copy url," I  copy it and paste it on T-O-R. As far as I can tell, it's never cropped the image. I use a 5 year old samsung galaxy s4. It's super easy.

Doesn't matter, because I'm about to explicitly violate rule #7 in a major way. How is that clue going to lead me to Nied's? I've never heard of it and I've lived hear for decades. Lots of places have fish sandwiches on the menu. Nied's isn't even on the first page if you do a Google search for "fish sandwich Pittsburgh." This is one of the big reasons I don't look for tags much anymore. The clues are usually super weak (assuming the setter even bothers to give a clue). More than half the time, if you don't already know where the tag is, the clue won't lead you to it.
    mrdestructicity
    2017-06-06 10:11:26
I agree, that one was a toughie. I had no clue. But sometimes people figure these things out. There's a trade-off here between making a tag findable and difficult enough so it's not just a race to see who gets their first, or who has time off from work etc. And when you set a tag, the location is obvious, to you, so there's a tendency to make it more obscure than it needs to be. I, myself, just accept that I'm more bothered by people not picking up my tags than by worrying about whether I'm creating a race, and try to make the clues easy. I agree, everybody should include a word clue, just to follow the rules and make things a little more fair, so people who haven't run across the location already have a chance to pick it up.

My two cents, you could have been a little closer to the bridge, but it's the right bridge from the proper side, looking in the correct direction. I think Paul was up in those bushes ahead of you. Paul, for a first-time pickup, close enough?

Close enough for me. I was at latitude, longitude 40.48675, -79.9138. ZZ was closer to the Lock building. This is a route that @gg recommended to get from near the zoo parking lot (Heth's Run) to the Washington Blvd oval: http://localhost/message-board/topic/butler-street-under-highland-park-bridge-and-ohio-river-blvd/#post-339542 . Biking on that gravel is possible but not fun. But it's better than biking on Allegheny River Blvd and getting killed. While exploring @gg's route today, I ran into a nice Iranian couple that spoke only a few words of English (they asked me if the could get out near the lock and I pointed the way).

New tag in play... It's the weekend, so this one's a bit further afield than usual. In fact, it's about 2.5 miles outside of the box. There's some climbing at the end, but not ludicrously so. I don't want this one to cause as much consternation as ol' Bigger Street, so this time I'll actually show you the street sign. Howboudah? Don't be a knob!

    zzwergel
    2017-06-19 19:10:06
We have had a few tags outside the box, but it's generally frowned upon. It's just too far for many of us to travel. The point of the game is to encourage riding, and finding new and unusual things, or something with an obscure history, merely by trying to identify the site -- and usually not being too obvious about it. There is also an accompanying spreadsheet listing all the tags, what they were, who set them, and who found them. See Page 1 of this thread. I find it fun to go back through some of the older threads and see if the tags are still around. Some are, some are not. A couple of anchors, the 8-foot-high "@" sign, the hopscotch poetry on Smallman, the trees chewed by beavers. Just gotta look for stuff.

This tag is roughly eight blocks from a CM, and no serious climbs needed. To possibly address your earlier question, Zach, if you were making a reference to the Mexican War Streets, then that, too, gets you in the general area. I suppose it's possible, though, that you do not know this place exists. Here's a video I made one day, just walking around (the bike is parked outside). The place is magical.

Unsolicited advice: get some toe clips (you'll need pedals that work with them).  They aren't very expensive and make hill climbing a lot easier as you can get a bit of power on the upstroke too. Also don't have to worry about feet  slipping off and destabilizing you on a hill climb. I bet you can get pedals, clips, and straps for $20 total. I used them for decades before moving into the much more expensive Shimano clipless pedals.

New tag! From one end of the city to the other... I don't think any of my Pittsburgh Randonneurs friends play ToR, but they would understand that this is the only street in the city where you could ride an entire randonneuring event on a single public way. Although it's at the less-developed end of the street, someone obviously thought this big red dot would be a convenient marker! THIS IS THE TAG: If you want to validate your guess on Street View before hitting the road, you might find this near the other end of the street. THIS IS NOT THE TAG, THIS IS JUST A CLUE:

I see the hint "the only street in the city where you could ride an entire randonneuring event on a single public way" but couldn't any street be used as the entire randonneuring route? Just go back and forth many times.
    paulheckbert
    2017-07-14 12:06:19
I suppose that's true. But "a randonneuring event" should get you where you need to be. It's the only way.

Just go back and forth many times.
    Nope. https://rusa.org/orgreg.html
Routes: Each event must use a RUSA-certified route. An event's route may be assigned after the event is approved for scheduling. An existing certified route may be used. New or changed routes must be submitted to RUSA at least a month before the date of the event where it is first to be used. Choosing the route is left to the organizer; however, routes consisting of doing the same loop multiple times, regardless of the distance of the brevet, are not permitted. Ideally, routes should be out and back, on low traffic roads, and on roads that are easy to follow. Extreme terrain should be advertised as such when the ride is first publicized. The date and location of a ride should take into consideration possible weather conditions to avoid, when possible, such as snow, or extreme cold or heat.

FWIW, I'm a randonneur and a tagger and the clue doesn't mean anything to me. I don't think it's that the road is 200k long. Or even 50k. And I don't think it's that it's named kittens and puppies or spring cheese. It's a toughie.

Thx @jonawebb. I'm still chafing because my first tags, which I thought were a little obscure, were all found within a couple hours. You yourself were skilled enough to claim my Arctic / Antarctic tag in *less than three hours!* Perhaps I've gotten a little more obscure. But finding entertaining street names is a good way for me -- a recent transplant who barely knows the city at all yet -- to find interesting places to explore and place tags. I'll try to mix it up more in the future, tho. But don't expect 'em to be too easy! ;^P
