I poked around back alleys in the FtDuqBlvd-Stanwix-Liberty-9th block on Friday but came up empty. (I was thinking "orchestra" might mean something near Heinz Hall or the Benedum.) Restaurant Depot is a cool place (especially the refrigerated section).
Of course you should be able to use stuff in the quantities that they carry. For example, you can get 1lb of (Canadian) yeast for $1-2, as opposed to $4.95 for an ounce at your (allegedly) friendly Whole Foods. Make daily bread? They have a nice selection of flours.
Note that you need a PA business tax number to shop there. They check.

If the 10:10 post was supposed to have a photo, I cannot see it. That said, it would be helpful if a photo could be posted that shows a little more of the tag. Between the "New Tag" block and the bikes, and the amount it's zoomed in, there isn't that much I can see of it. I understand the 10:10 post to mean that this is a very new mural, somewhere, probably so new the paint is hardly dry on it, which makes it all the more necessary to show more than about a two-foot square.
stuinmccandless
2016-10-10 10:52:28

2016-10-12 12:47:58
@dberlin, congrats.
So far as posting the link goes, it's easier on the desktop than on a phone. Since the message board update I always have to monkey around with things to get it to work. But the key thing is to get a link to the actual image (usually a URL that ends with ".jpg"). This is sometimes hard or impossible to do with one of the image sharing apps on a phone; using a browser and going to the app website works better. Once you're there, you can usually get an image link by long-pressing and choosing something like "Copy image address".
Then, once you've got that, either type in "less than sign" img src="your link goes here" "right slash" "greater than sign" or use the "IMG" link at the top of the page to do the same thing.
Sometimes you'll get a broken link when you do that. It means the image sharing site is blocking the access from the BikePgh website. Probably because they want to get people to access their website.

An Observation (something this particular place is good for): I am somewhat out of contention for a while. I am one of the few people who would not have to climb a major hill to get to it. So I will let someone else grab this. I hope none of you are Undaunted by hills (and McDowell has nothing to do with this clue).

The hint pic for the last tag included an old tag that worked the theme of acute corner buildings. Since then I had wanted to post this one, a cute corner building.
You should be able to situate it by inspecting the background.
The only other thing that I might add is that it's (just) a bit of a let-down after the last one.
[PM to my fellow OCDs Paul, Dan, Jon: Can we let this one float for a day or so? I bet some other folks could snag it. Didn't mean to pick that last one up, really. But the weather was so, so gorgeous. This 12-tag program is hard to stick to; so far I've only managed Step One.]

A long time ago someone sent in a letter to Dear Abby (does anyone remember that perennial column in the daily papers, back when they were actually on paper?) asking the age-old (trick) question "why is it that the thing I'm looking for is always in the last place that I look?"
To my consternation, Abby took the question seriously and published what I remember being an earnest answer. I did a ½-hearted web search for it just now but no luck.
So here's the deeper question: @ph found what looks like (to me) the right marker on his 4th try. Can we safely assume that he found all of them? or is there perhaps a 5th one, somewhere? Perhaps in a warehouse; in a box of backup replacements or ones held in reserve for the day when all six banks rightfully have their bike trails and we have finally declared victory? Or maybe today, on some lonely spot on the south shore of the Allegheny or Ohio?
Mysteries of Pittsburgh...
But seriously. That was an awesome saga of tag + pickups.

FWIW, Google says that point is 2.3 miles from the fountain, as the crow flies, or 3.1 miles routing via the trail. I wonder how they figured 2.5 miles.
steven
2016-11-13 02:48:33
On the Southside part of the trail, if you are at the 0.0 mile marker and you turn your head to the left, the point is directly across the Mon.
So, they draw an imaginary line across each river from the point and mark that 0.0.
Of course, you could get super technical about how the line is drawn, but someone made that decision a long time ago. My guess is that it is a due N-S line as the point is pretty much pointing due W.

Thank you for the hint.
This country never ceases to amaze me for its variety of religions. Where I grew up there was Catholic and Protestant. The latter was some mix of established denominations, mostly with roots in the UK. I was slotted into the Catholic partition so never really had cause to pay attention to the other ones. In this country it seems like anyone with enough rent money can start their own church and build a congregation around it. Exceptionalism at maybe its best.
The red door implies Anglican, but I'm guessing that's not what we have here (unless the Pentecostals are also into color signifiers; sorry I don't follow this stuff that closely).
[Bear with me...]
A number of years ago I was in Bonn, outside a church in the evening, with a choir inside singing in a truly heavenly way and people streaming in. The church looked catholic, which didn't seem right. I asked a passerby if this was a catholic church. No, he said, it's lutheran. But the architecture is catholic, I said. Yes, he replied, we took over their buildings when we threw them out.

re the previous tag...
I've been in Pittsburgh for a long time, back when this place really was known as Herr's Island. Filled with Pittsburgh's rendering plants. Actually they had been shut down by the time I got around to biking there. But it was a totally surreal experience. Like when I peered into a tank next to the river that had been used to store rendered fat (waiting, I imagined, for its trip to some soap factory down the Ohio). The tank had had been neatly scraped with shovels, to get as much out as possible. No waste, even at the end.
And then there was the main building. It felt too creepy to explore (back then I was still young and impressionable). But I do remember these ramps leading down to what I imagined were the delivery docks, where day after day left-over animal parts (and maybe an occasional gangster) were dumped into vats for simmering.
So when this tag came up I wondered. Was that wall a part of that very same plant? (It would be the north wall, maybe; the ramps were on the south.) From a time when even base industrial architecture included some bit of ornament, irrespective of its purpose.

I found this. Looks like that part of the island is the "southern" end. It was heavily contaminated with toxic crap from some sort of salvage operation. The tennis courts are on top of all the encapsulated toxic waste. So most likely that wall, if it was left over, is from the salvage plant.
From the marina on down is the central and northern part of the island. That was the Western Packing plant. They took all the leftover organics and dumped it into a landfill. Looks like that ended up in the URAs hands in the late 70s.

As to clues, it's obviously on the Millvale end of the river trail, the railroad track is just the other side of the big intersection, the church with the Maxo Vanka murals is directly behind you, and of course, Logan Street is mere yards away.

The shadows don't tell you location, but if you know the photo's taken in late afternoon and you see the sun is grazing the wall, from the right, you know the sun's in the west and you're looking south so you're probably on a street that runs roughly east-west. It's possible to get more quantitative if you know or can guess the time more precisely. There are tools to help with this:

paulheckbert
2016-12-22 18:36:42
Eden Way is actually a bit closer to north-south than east-west (around 42 degrees from north). Seems like one might need to get slightly more quantitative with this method in order to have more than zero significant digits. :-)

By the way, per Wikipedia Forbes isonger than Penn but question is whether you accept the rule that a street ends when the numbering changes. Ie, when Penn hits Wilkinsburg
edronline
2016-12-27 19:20:02
Penn and Fifth start out pretty close in downtown. Fifth more or less wanders straight east. Penn loops north, east, the curls southwards, intersects Fifth and keeps going on to Wilkinsburg. Penn has already arced out wider by the time they intersect, and then it keeps going to the Wilkinsburg line. The Wikipedia article simply calls Fifth "one of the longest". Maybe, but so what? It's just the interweb.
Call up a map and see for yourself. Or fire up Endomondo or whatnot and trace out the routes.

Sorry, typo above. The correct name is
Sakyamuni Buddha Temple. As you can see in the photo, Buddha is pleased to have a dollop of snow in his face.
They've got some other nice sculptures there. In case you're unfamiliar with the vertical-striped flag, that's the buddhist flag:
The six colours of the flag represent the colours of the aura that emanated from the body of the Buddha when He attained Enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. The horizontal stripes represent the races of the world living in harmony and the vertical stripes represent eternal world peace. The colours symbolise the perfection of Buddhahood and the Dharma.
The Blue light that radiated from the Buddha's hair symbolises the spirit of Universal Compassion for all beings.
The Yellow light that radiated from the Buddha's epidermis symbolises the Middle Way which avoids all extremes and brings balance and liberation.
The Red light that radiated from the Buddha's flesh symbolises the blessings that the practice of the Buddha's Teaching brings.
The White light that radiated from the Buddha's bones and teeth symbolises the purity of the Buddha's Teaching and the liberation it brings.
The Orange light that radiated from the Buddha's palms, heels and lips symbolises the unshakable Wisdom of the Buddha's Teaching.
The Combination Colour symbolises the universality of the Truth of the Buddha's Teaching.

I've wondered, occasionally, whether the people shown were parishioners at the time the church was demolished to make way for an (ugly) office building. (Which my wife also worked in, for a while.) I do sort of hope they're those parishioners, a snapshot in time. It would have made sense for it to be a part of the sales agreement. (Yes, I could have googled around for the actual story, but I didn't.)
Apart from that, all that's left is the tower:
I had to take a ride around the block before I could snap this. The doorway seems to be a hangout for smokers who work in the office building.

Scott is an amazingly cool person. I first met him back when he was selling hot dogs in front of the Hillman Library. Later I got to know him as the guy running this place (a former gas station). If you go by there you always notice something interesting. Sure, it's a dump. But it doesn't mean that a keen mind isn't always adding things, rearranging stuff, continually engaging with his world.
I've been buying xmas trees from him for a few years. He gets nice ones and sells them at a reasonable price. Every time, he asks me where I'm from. "Squirrel Hill" I'll say and he'd reply "Yeah but where are you *really* from". So I end up having to tell him I moved from Montreal. And then he insists I teach him something in French; "how do I say _____?". Which I do, even working on the pronunciation. He'll get it.
Still need to go by and move the pail back one notch to the right.

You would likely have passed it a 1000 times; it's been there a good while. I'm not sure I've seen it open in the past couple of years, though. Maybe someone who frequents the night life on the strip could tell us.
As near as I could tell they were mostly open at night, catering to the partiers. The Strip, as far as know, is the one 24h-ish district in Pittsburgh: different sets of people moving through, around the clock, doing different things. (Ok, less so since wholesalers started to move away.)

In Pittsburgh, the Culver City of South-Western Pennsylvania, you will come across many strange sights (sites?). This tag features the
Adairsville Police Station. Teleported, somehow, from north-western Georgia.
Googling "Adairsville Pittsburgh" doesn't come up with anything obvious, at least not on the first page. It makes me confident that Adairsville is not one of our neighborhoods. But I have to admit that it did make me wonder while I was standing there: Maybe it
was one of the 90? Or perhaps the lost 91st?
I can tell you that the building is public, not sectarian. Maybe the reflection in the glass is helpful (no, not of the guy on the left). The cans on the radiator are cat food. When you do your pickup, please ask what that's about. It's kind of, weird.

it has pictures of things that are inside the rectangle.
I know where this is and it is near other tags that have been posted over the last 3-4 months and also near an active location of discussion in other threads that many people have checked out or regularly bike.
But what again constitutes the official rectangle? Pinned posts would be great (i.e., one with the rules), but we don't have that feature.

The link to the rectangle is on page 1 of this thread, and its four predecessors.
We've had a few tags outside the box; I set one myself once. Looks like this one is just off a diagonal, and not by much. From another thread, there's a bike related meeting this Sunday in that same part of town, so I'm not going to squawk about this one too much. It's just a long ways from my house, a most-of-a-day excursion just to get out there.

The rectangle shows the bounds of (some version of) the Bike Pittsburgh map. The rules don't require keeping tags inside that rectangle, only "within Pittsburgh city limits and the surrounding neighborhoods", which is kind of vague.
Is the rectangle helpful, now that the map shows 1200+ tags? Or are the tags themselves all we need to provide a sufficient "try to pick a tag somewhere in this general area" hint to new taggers, which I think was the point of the original rectangle?
steven

Further up the hill is a farm and there's a nice school. The area seems in a stage of pre-gentrification; urban types are moving in and are renovating. Could be hot. Buy now. I typically wait 48h then post. If someone says they know where it is I don't hint. Otherwise I hint.
I thought the correction to the clue would be a hint. Well, maybe a bit of one; I guess it's a state of mind. Anyway, if you look around you should be able to spot places where C's congregate, for one purpose or another.

Just to wrap up that whole clue and hint thing in the previous tag:
- This park is on the block between A St and B St.
- The Mail Carriers' union hall is also across the street
- The dead people are just over the top of the hill, in the Union Dale Cemetery.
- And, I'm given to understand, California is considered to be "a state of mind".
Good thing Rusty got to it; additional clues would have been harder to come up with.

I did not presume to lean my bike up against the Benz. But I confess I wanted to.
It's a parking lot with a friendly attendant. He cheerfully let me enter the property, later he told me that the shoe company had moved to the South Side. I looked them up: they were
acquired by Amazon (owner of Zappos). Coincidentally (or not) Amazon's Pittsburgh lab was first located in that building, before they moved to the SSide.
I'm not so sure any of the equations make much sense. But that's probably me and my dated math skillz. Heck, I never managed to sell my startup to Amazon. And, uh, I guess I don't even have a startup...

Perhaps it could be relegated to Frank Curto Park, that graveyard of sculptures which seemed like a good idea at the time?
This reminds me of a sculpture park west of Budapest, full of Communist era artifacts. When the regime changed, popular sentiment was to simply destroy all reminders of the past. But someone had the the prescience to instead have them carted out to a field out in the country and set up in rows. I once got to visit the place. It was an amazing experience; our hosts, for the only time I was there, actually opened up and talked about how it was in the old days. I'd give you more clueage, but even if you knew nothing about the city, everything you could possibly need is literally right there in front of you.
I guess I'll answer the questions tho.
- I too have been wondering for a while about identifying tags by telephone pole numbers. If you find a public database, please let me know! ;^)
- Yes, this is near a park or ravine.
- That blue/green thing way back is the side of a house that burned quite recently. Might be worth a peek while you're there, if you're into that sort of thing.
- Streetview should match up quite well. Except for the burned house, that is.

I don't want to make it too obvious, because I'd really feel horrible for any poor schmucks who get Bruced, after such a long, hard climb.

Wilksboro and Stonelea is correct.
From Tribune-Review article
http://triblive.com/news/allegheny/5597217-74/bridge-north-residents
The city in 2007 closed the Wilksboro Avenue footbridge, a Victorian-era walkway stretching nearly 400 feet over a Brighton Heights gorge, because of structural deficiencies, according to a city engineer's report. ...
Neighbors consider the Wilksboro Bridge, built around 1895 when people walked or caught streetcars to work, a special asset. The bridge permitted residents from a western section of Brighton Heights to cross the ravine and catch streetcars on California Avenue. ...
City Councilwoman Darlene Harris of Spring Garden, whose district includes Brighton Heights, said she's earmarked $420,000 in the capital budget to repair the Wilksboro bridge and advocated for federal highway money to rebuild the Davis bridge. City engineers estimated in 2007 it would cost $700,000 to $800,000 for a total rehabilitation of the Wilksboro span.
In my opinion they should give the rehab project to some high school students and let them work on it for a few years until they get it done.
paulheckbert
2017-05-23 22:31:24
Just throwing this out there: if BikePgh reached out to Darlene Harris and tried to help get Federal funding for this bridge rehab, that would be a good way to show that they're interested in helping people all across the city improve their non-motorized transport infrastructure, and that they don't hold a grudge. And maybe she would be willing to consider incorporating bikes into the rehab, if it happens. In any case it might help show people in Spring Garden that BikePgh is not an elitist organization that only cars about bicyclists Downtown and in the East End.

I made a quick and dirty tool to make it easier for me (and you) to post Flickr-hosted photos in T-o-R, without the forum's dreaded penchant for cropping photos. I know some other folks here use Flickr, so I figured I'd share.
Say you're chasing a tag. You take your picture and upload it to Flickr. Then how do you get that into a forum post?
Now you can
go here and enter your Flickr account's username. The program then looks at your Flickr feed and finds your most recently uploaded photo.
It presents you with two resized thumbnails of that photo. One is max 500 pixels wide, which is just right for posting on this forum without cropping. The other is max 320 pixels wide, for when you want something smaller.
With each image, you're given code you can copy and paste straight into a forum post that'll display the thumbnail image, with a link so that viewers can click thru to see the original (presumably larger) image.
This is just a first pass, so it might be buggy and could probably be enhanced. But I wanted to get something functional out there, so that I can start claiming tags in the field, rather than biking back home to my HTML editor. If you use it, let me know how it works for you.
ornoth
2017-06-04 20:31:41
^Hmmmm, I use flickr and all I ever do is take the shot, go to my camera roll (the part that shows the thumbnails) and pick the image. Once i pick the image, my app displays the typical share icon among a few others. I chose the share icon and a list of options comes up. One option is "copy url," I copy it and paste it on T-O-R.
As far as I can tell, it's never cropped the image.
I use a 5 year old samsung galaxy s4.
It's super easy.

Doesn't matter, because I'm about to explicitly violate rule #7 in a major way.
How is that clue going to lead me to Nied's? I've never heard of it and I've lived hear for decades. Lots of places have fish sandwiches on the menu. Nied's isn't even on the first page if you do a Google search for "fish sandwich Pittsburgh."
This is one of the big reasons I don't look for tags much anymore. The clues are usually super weak (assuming the setter even bothers to give a clue). More than half the time, if you don't already know where the tag is, the clue won't lead you to it.
mrdestructicity
2017-06-06 10:11:26
I agree, that one was a toughie. I had no clue. But sometimes people figure these things out.
There's a trade-off here between making a tag findable and difficult enough so it's not just a race to see who gets their first, or who has time off from work etc. And when you set a tag, the location is obvious, to you, so there's a tendency to make it more obscure than it needs to be.
I, myself, just accept that I'm more bothered by people not picking up my tags than by worrying about whether I'm creating a race, and try to make the clues easy.
I agree, everybody should include a word clue, just to follow the rules and make things a little more fair, so people who haven't run across the location already have a chance to pick it up.

We have had a few tags outside the box, but it's generally frowned upon. It's just too far for many of us to travel.
The point of the game is to encourage riding, and finding new and unusual things, or something with an obscure history, merely by trying to identify the site -- and usually not being too obvious about it.
There is also an accompanying spreadsheet listing all the tags, what they were, who set them, and who found them. See Page 1 of this thread.
I find it fun to go back through some of the older threads and see if the tags are still around. Some are, some are not. A couple of anchors, the 8-foot-high "@" sign, the hopscotch poetry on Smallman, the trees chewed by beavers. Just gotta look for stuff.

This tag is roughly eight blocks from a CM, and no serious climbs needed. To possibly address your earlier question, Zach, if you were making a reference to the Mexican War Streets, then that, too, gets you in the general area.
I suppose it's possible, though, that you do not know this place exists. Here's a
video I made one day, just walking around (the bike is parked outside). The place is magical.

Unsolicited advice: get some toe clips (you'll need pedals that work with them). They aren't very expensive and make hill climbing a lot easier as you can get a bit of power on the upstroke too. Also don't have to worry about feet slipping off and destabilizing you on a hill climb. I bet you can get pedals, clips, and straps for $20 total.
I used them for decades before moving into the much more expensive Shimano clipless pedals.

New tag!
From one end of the city to the other...
I don't think any of my
Pittsburgh Randonneurs friends play ToR, but they would understand that this is the only street in the city where you could ride an entire randonneuring event on a single public way.
Although it's at the less-developed end of the street, someone obviously thought this big red dot would be a convenient marker!
THIS IS THE TAG:
If you want to validate your guess on Street View before hitting the road, you might find this near the other end of the street.
THIS IS NOT THE TAG, THIS IS JUST A CLUE:
ornoth
2017-07-12 16:49:17
I see the hint "the only street in the city where you could ride an entire randonneuring event on a single public way" but couldn't any street be used as the entire randonneuring route? Just go back and forth many times.
paulheckbert
2017-07-14 12:06:19
I suppose that's true. But "a randonneuring event" should get you where you need to be. It's the only way.
ornoth
2017-07-14 14:30:10
Just go back and forth many times.
Nope.
https://rusa.org/orgreg.html
Routes:
Each event must use a RUSA-certified route. An event's route may be assigned after the event is approved for scheduling. An existing certified route may be used. New or changed routes must be submitted to RUSA at least a month before the date of the event where it is first to be used.
Choosing the route is left to the organizer; however, routes consisting of doing the same loop multiple times, regardless of the distance of the brevet, are not permitted. Ideally, routes should be out and back, on low traffic roads, and on roads that are easy to follow. Extreme terrain should be advertised as such when the ride is first publicized. The date and location of a ride should take into consideration possible weather conditions to avoid, when possible, such as snow, or extreme cold or heat.

FWIW, I'm a randonneur and a tagger and the clue doesn't mean anything to me. I don't think it's that the road is 200k long. Or even 50k. And I don't think it's that it's named kittens and puppies or spring cheese. It's a toughie.

2017-07-14 17:17:08

Thx @jonawebb. I'm still chafing because my first tags, which I thought were a little obscure, were all found within a couple hours. You yourself were skilled enough to claim
my Arctic / Antarctic tag in *less than three hours!*
Perhaps I've gotten a little more obscure. But finding entertaining street names is a good way for me -- a recent transplant who barely knows the city at all yet -- to find interesting places to explore and place tags.
I'll try to mix it up more in the future, tho. But don't expect 'em to be too easy! ;^P
