The Royal Rumball - August 11 2013

royalrumball.wordpress.com Date: Sunday August 11 2013 Location: Highland Park Entry Garden Time: 11 am meetup, 11:30 am neutral start. 50 miles, 5000 feet of climbing. Think dirt roads leading past a giant pet cemetery, hopping a barrier for a choice section of abandoned asphalt and all the rumballs you care to eat (or not). The winner gets a wrestling belt, and will be expected to defend their title or give up the belt to new contenders at a to-be-announced future event. The Royal Rumball is a wrestling themed, mixed surface alleycat-like bike ride that will take riders deep into the North Hills of Pittsburgh, hitting as many rough, dirt and abandoned roads as possible. The route features a split of open suburban roadways and lesser used dirt roads, along with a few sections of particularly rough abandoned roads. While every effort has been made to avoid fast and high traffic roadways, given the nature of our road system you will at points be sharing the road with traffic and crossing local highways. There are significant road miles. It is in your best interest to follow all traffic laws, look both ways and enjoy the ride safely. The ride is meant for and will be accomplished in the fastest time on road or cyclocross bikes with large volume tires, but all bikes are welcome. This is a self supported ride, you should bring tools to fix flat tires and keep your bike rolling, and a Plan B if something goes awry. You’re on your own with this one, liable for your own actions. We will provide a detailed cue sheet with maps and turn-by-turn directions noting water stops and convenient bail-out points. Everything else is your responsibility. Meet at the Highland Park Entry Garden on Sunday August 11th 2013 at 11 am. At 11:30 am we will ride as a neutral group to the starting point outside of town. As in the Royal Rumble, top contenders will begin with a random staggered start. Long shots looking for a title grab and those just in it for the ride will follow. Ride in nothing but bib-shorts and get a top starting position. Championship Belts will be awarded to the top male and top female contenders. A bonus race within a race will vie for the Intercontinental Rumball Title. No registration, no entry fees. We’ll gather to share a few drinks and award the belts in Lawrenceville in the early evening. royalrumball.wordpress.com

stef, i will NOT wrestle you, it will be bad enough being out ridden by a girl, i don't need instagrammed proof of a headlock too,

I am guessing that opportunities to use a bathroom is going to be squatting next to a tree in the woods somewhere? Wearing bibs may be difficult.

Emerling and Squaw Valley parks have restrooms. Porta-johns along the north shore trail. You need the Endura drop tail bibs for ladies.

ok i guess i spoke too soon. i just looked at the map. i do thank you for the suggestions. REI had a limited number of bibs when i looked tonight. i may just pee myself if i don't feel like stopping. so is a cross bike the right choice for this? it seems like a lot of the route is on the road, so i am wondering what tire choice i should make. i am not familiar with anything that is off of the road. it seems like there isn't much off road (i have read maps wrong before), but the description warns of areas of gravel and dirt and whatnot. i need to stop worrying about this and maybe come up with a wrestling costume instead.

You don't really need knobby tires to do this, it definitely won't hurt to have some cross tires, but like the description says, it's doable on a road bike with 28mm-32mm tires. Don't stress about it too much.

There is a lot of road. Some of it is pretty rough, other parts are dirt roads, with abandoned roads and a few sections of city trail thrown in. If I was riding this route I'd choose 28 - 38 mm tires. Pre-riding the course on 37 mm Panaracer Paselas was perfect.

I've done a majority of the route on a road bike many times. 25c are better than 23c, but still doable. There will be portajohns in Hartwood too.

Mmmm, just found out there is rail road ballast. I have ridden that on a road bike but would not recommend it. Still, I've ridden Old Mill and McCelland on a road bike just fine.

I love getting funny sunburn patterns. I mean that seriously. That was great. And great job to those who raced in wrestling masks. Geez. Must have been an oven in there. It is "road" surface like that that makes me feel like I can get a start on confidently learning bike handling skills I lack. Not too rocky and totally manageable on little knobby tires.
