Problem with a towing strap is that you have to be very careful with your starts and stops or he'll plow into you / you'll give him whiplash.
You kind of need a really specialized tandem, or at least a tow bar instead of a tow strap.
My son is now 6 and can handle his 2 wheeler pretty well, but does not have the stamina for a longer trail ride just yet. I am trying to figure out a way to have him pedal his own bike and be able to help him out when he needs a break. I have 2 kids so we already have a trail a bike, but my 4 year old is transitioning to that.
Im not really able to throw down 70 bucks for a trail gator and there does not seem to be too many available second hand. Has anyone ever tried making a homemade one or possibly a towing strap to pull him if I can trust him to handle the steering on his own?

I have mulled over something like that for a long time, but I have not come up with anything. But holy crap, I just thought of this: Try one of those retractable dog leashes, get a small one that doesn't extend too far, strap it to your seat post, and tie a short piece of bungee cord around the kid's bikes head tube to clip to and absorb shocks. I may try this myself. If you have a rear rack it would be even better, attach the thing to the rack and it would keep it away from your back wheel.
