What sort of lock did you use? (just for reference)
I know there are a ton of cameras around there, are any actually pointing at the rack and will they share or at least examine the video for you?
My 3 year old silver Trek 7.2FX was stolen from a bike rack in the UPMC Presbyterian parking structure. The rack is located on the Lothrop
Street side near the entrance to the Eye and Ear center. The lock was cut and it was stolen sometime between 7am and 4:20pm. The bike had a back rack and black milk carton bungeed on at the time that it was stolen. I think there was a water bottle holder, too. A silver helmet was also stolen. It looks basically like this: http://www.iribike.com/TREK/72fx_silver.jpg

I was too upset to actually see if any cameras were there, but I'll probably take a look tomorrow. It's a big garage, so I wonder if there are actually any pointing toward the bike rack
Im sorry to hear about your bike. Even if there arent any cameras pointing at the rack, there are always some at the entrance and exit so it may have gotten the thief riding away.
And if there are not cameras pointing at the bike rack, there should be. File a formal complaint if that is the case.
Chances are also good that the thief was wearing the same thing walking in as riding out, so it might be possible to see a face on another camera, even if not shown with your bike.
Ironically, there is a giant sign that says "this garage is monitored by tv cameras" right outside the entrance to the bike rack area and not a camera in sight I plan on actually getting the serial number for my next bike (place we bought it from last time didn't write it on the receipt and now can't find their paper only records), registering it everywhere I can, and putting a u-lock/cable lock on it...
Thanks for everyone's advice; please keep keeping an eye out for my bike!
I suspect that what cameras exist are looking at the elevators and/or car entrances & exits.
Really, they're not going to give a damn about bikes until we cyclists make noise. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
That Trek retails about $500 new. If wager if someone did $500 damage to a car in that garage, they'd be on it so fast it'd scare you.
you might want to talk to UMPC security... sometimes they have a habit of taking bikes for no reason without notice. that has happened in that area in the past.
