Hmmm, what's a krimpet?

swalfoort
2010-03-25 15:11:20

they taste good with tea

erok
2010-03-25 15:36:51

sometimes they have jelly inside. yum

erok
2010-03-25 15:38:28

Butter-flavoured cake with maple syrup-flavoured icing? I'd venture to guess those taste good with ANYTHING.

(Note surreptitious use of British spelling, in honour(Ha! Again!) of tweed)

reddan
2010-03-25 15:39:38

Wish I could attend but I'll be out of town for this inaugural running playing polo in whiskey country, Lexington KY.

This should be super fun.

bradq
2010-03-25 16:02:23

Oh hell yes. I am there. I am immediately informing my family that time slot is irrevocably occupied.

edmonds59
2010-03-25 16:11:10

bring them along

erok
2010-03-25 16:18:31

Bill, you might have to share your krimpets with them......! I can hear it now -- May I have four krimpets to go, please?

swalfoort
2010-03-25 16:19:12

Oh, erok, you're funny.

Not sharing me krimpets.

edmonds59
2010-03-25 16:33:02

Dress up in old formal clothes? Puff on a pipe and ride regally down the road? Eat Krimpets?

Sounds cool!

um....

*scratches head*

How is this different from any other day?

mick
2010-03-25 16:36:17

Not quite as vintage as it should be, but maybe this the motivation I need to dust off that old Miyata in my basement. I can do it on a 1970's era ten speed, right? Oh how I loved that bike. I've kept it all those years just for the nostaglia value. It would be nice to have it out on the road again. Except that it would probably spoil all those great memories....!

swalfoort
2010-03-25 17:08:29

I don't have any fancy tweed, nor a dapper mustache :(

trousers and a sportcoat, suffice?

sloaps
2010-03-25 17:37:08

Sara, it would look good next to my 1970s era British-mfg'd 10-speed. And judging from past CMs and other group rides I've been on, there are others still around, too.

stuinmccandless
2010-03-25 17:54:31

I'm with sloaps. No tweed per se, but is regular dressiness okay? How about a smoking jacket?

alnilam
2010-03-25 17:54:59

I think the general custom in other places is that attitude is more important than actual gear. Slow and social is the order of the day.

SW, go for it! Actually old ten speeds can be quite excellent when the drop bars are swapped for some uprights. If you've never ridden a nice light bike in a upright position, it's quite an excellent feeling.

Also, I got myself quite a nice wool sportcoat at the Red, White, and Blue store on rt 51 for $3, and another one for $5. That's my gear.

edmonds59
2010-03-25 17:55:39

Red, White, and Blue store on rt 51

Is that where all the good clothes are now since the bloomfield goodwill closed up?

sloaps
2010-03-25 17:58:21

edmonds59 is spot on! It is all about the attitude. A snappy outfit, old or new, won't hurt either.

Swalfoort: I will actually be riding a Miyata for this event! Some upright porteur bars from velo-orange and a B17 saddle have made a world of difference. Miyata's are terrific bikes for a variety of reasons, so do enjoy riding it!

A week and a half is also a most proper length of time to produce a basic mustache, or to refine a beard to an exquisite masterpiece.

wojty
2010-03-25 18:06:33

Not to hijack things...

Sloaps - That Red White and Blue has been awesome for far longer than the Bloomfield Goodwill has been closed, well worth the trip. Also be sure to check out North Hills Community Thrift on Babcock Blvd, reasonably accessible by bike via Millvale.

bradq
2010-03-25 18:14:20

Good heavens.

Aren't the suburbs inconvenient?

If you don't have your own tailor, like civilized people do, wouldn't Brooks Brothers have appropriate attire?

mick
2010-03-25 18:28:43

I don't have any fancy tweed, nor a dapper mustache :(

Hmm, I have a tweed jacket and a mustache! All set.

2010-03-25 18:54:45

Not to hijack things...

The Red White and Blue on 65 in Bellevue/Avalon is also quite nice, and is easily accessible from California Ave.

reddan

@edmunds Umberto Dei Regale

Sweet!

Now I know what to ride when I'm wearing a tux.

mick
2010-03-25 19:56:43

Sure, for the very successful bicycle band busker.

edmonds59
2010-03-25 20:14:40

Of course!

Sartorial splendor is critical to the successful bicycle busker.

This is why they are so often seen climbing into the donations box behind the Goodwill.

mick
2010-03-25 21:04:05

I get this weekly " this is happening" email blast every week of local events (thisishappening.com). Wojty, I don't know if that is someplace you would want to post this, kind of reach beyond the standard tuned in bike circle.

Also, if Brad Q isn't going to be there, I hope someone with some photo skills steps up, I would sure want the 'burgh to be well represented on those webs.

This would be something cool to get written up in the City Paper or something. Anybody know anybody?

edmonds59
2010-03-29 11:23:39

BOURBON BRAD BOURBON.

mayhew
2010-03-29 12:31:04

trying to get my '52 Royal Crown Dutch Bike ready in time.

timito
2010-03-29 12:33:05

That's the plan. A weekend of bourbon and polo with friends in Lexington. Bourbon and polo. Bourbon and polo. And with some of my favorite people. Has all the makings of a good weekend.

As for the tweed ride, I will again say that this should be awesome. Bummed to miss it, I would have busted out the Swingbike for this one. Group rides are all about group attitude and this looks to have good attitude.

bradq
2010-03-29 12:44:43

This is happening is a great suggestion. I know some one threw us up on the pgh section of reddit as well too.

Been in touch with the PG and iheartpgh as well, both are doing blog write-ups today or tomorrow.

Drew, the partner in crime of ClankWorks, is quite a photographer himself, and I am sure will be doing whatever documentation he is able. Pretty sure he will be attempting to get the medium format some film in time, seeing as we want to keep this as tweed oriented as possible…

wojty
2010-03-29 12:54:17

Sadly, I'll be breveting my buns (or at least my krimpets) off, so will miss Tweed. However, I did happen across this photoset that may provide happy inspiration.

reddan
2010-03-29 20:54:50

I don't have any tweed but I might make this my first group biking event, the weather for Saturday looks beautiful and I do love Piper's.

matatarski
2010-03-29 23:09:43

maybe clankworks will have some extra tweed you can borrow

erok
2010-03-30 03:09:35

Just watch out for sketchy individuals slinking around saying "hey, buddy, wanna buy some tweed?".

edmonds59
2010-03-30 11:42:58

Weather forecast is making me re-think the tweed thing, as all mine is wool, and fairly heavy. I am still working on options. What's the consensus, stay "in the era" in terms of style/look or switch to seersucker, the summer counterpart of tweed?

swalfoort
2010-04-02 23:18:27

No kidding! I was out today in a t shirt and shorts and I was miserable. I do not dig the heat. Not this soon anyway. I will definitely be trying options. Seersucker would def be cool.

edmonds59
2010-04-03 00:12:26

SEERSUCKER IS FOR DANDIES YINZ WEIRDOS!

chefjohn
2010-04-03 07:07:54

From the Pittsburgh Tribune-Gazette, April 3, 2040;

"In the early 2000's, a very small percentage of Americans used bicycles until an occurrence called the "Tweed Ride" began to change the perception by the public that one needed to be an elite athlete, a steroid user, or both, in order to ride a bicycle. These "Tweed Rides" in part led to the end of the "Peak Car" period, during which anything up to and including military vehicles, burning fossil oil for fuel, were considered acceptable transportation.

These rides also spurred Penn State researchers to develop the Super-Merino sheep, with a high performance wool coat that is in demand by the resurgent U.S. garment industry.

Due to the reduced automobile use that this movement initiated, most of what was known in that era as "malls" and "exurbs", characterized by large areas of underutilized space, are now the locations of our sheep and hemp farms, and solar/wind hydrogen conversion plants that are the foundation of our current economy."

Save the world.

edmonds59
2010-04-03 13:45:00

I wasn't actually able to participate in the ride but I stopped by to see the bib and tucker, good looking bunch. Hope you enjoyed a splendid day, maybe next time.

timito
2010-04-04 13:33:41

post pics or it didn't happen

erok
2010-04-04 13:36:49

That ride was flipping excellent! Do again!

Post up pictures please.

edmonds59
2010-04-04 13:51:47

I think the Yorkie in the basket was the hit of the show.

stuinmccandless
2010-04-04 14:00:10

Anyone know where pictures from this will be posted? I saw quite a few cameras as we went along.

matatarski
2010-04-04 14:21:04

wojty, since I personally don't have a flikr account or anything like that, I would be happy to send you guys any photos I have for you to make a page, if you want to do that. I just have a couple. Let me know.

edmonds59
2010-04-04 14:47:30

Did the yorkie have a helmet and sunglasses on?

willie
2010-04-04 14:56:11

Or a bowtie?

greenbike
2010-04-04 15:55:31

Thanks for putting this on. It was a lot of fun!

dwillen
2010-04-04 16:11:02

She did have an Easter bow in her hair, but I don't know where it went.

edmonds59
2010-04-04 17:26:06

We want to thank all of you for coming out, it was a truly splendid time! We already have plans for another ride or two, so stay tuned!

As for photos, anyone is welcome to send and email to myself or drew (ben@ or drew@ clankworks.com) and we will get a gallery assembled.

We will be putting a follow-up post on our blog within a day or two with initial pictures and will keep adding. We got a nice photo spot in the PG yesterday too!

wojty
2010-04-05 11:55:22

do you have a link to the PG photo?

erok
2010-04-05 13:39:38

The baffled look on hundreds of dazed and confused Penquins fans - priceless.

edmonds59
2010-04-05 14:10:07

I futzed aropund in the parking lot at the beginning of the ride. I got on my bike to bring up the rear, then discovered I had a flat tire. My pump didn't help.

If I had discovered the flat two minutes earlier, I'm sure someone would have helped me, but by the time I was sure it was flat, I was alone.

I neglected to have a patch kit - not sure if I would want to use with my suit, white shirt, and tie, but I should have it.

With two buses home, I TRIPLED! my lifetime use of bus bike racks.

A mormon asked me if I was a missionary.

Mick

mick
2010-04-05 17:45:47

Oh that stinks.

What did you tell the mormon?

edmonds59
2010-04-05 17:51:22

Morman: Are you a missionary?

You: As a matter of fact I am, Would it be ok if I talked with you a bit about cycling?

netviln
2010-04-05 18:25:19

You: "Have you accepted Eddy Merckx as the greatest cyclist of all time?"

edmonds59
2010-04-05 19:42:47

Waiting for the second coming of Sheldon Brown.

kordite
2010-04-05 20:07:14

I would like to offer you a copy of Commuting 101. It has changed my life and I hope it will change yours.

netviln
2010-04-05 20:09:46

I told the Mormon about the tweed ride.

I gave him directions to the Mormon Church on Dithridge street.

I refrained from telling him that in my most decadent period, I lived in a house which is right where the sanctuary of the church is - and in the space directly above the alter, I committed a variety of sins and illegal acts, the memory of which always make me smile.

mick
2010-04-05 20:12:24

"We got half a pack of smokes, a full tank of gas, it's 150 miles, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses. Hit it!"

Oh wait I got a flat

@Mick

(Blues Bros. or something like that)

chefjohn
2010-04-06 00:56:25

"this is a patch kit. strong stuff."

chefjohn
2010-04-06 00:57:35
