Visting from the UK

Hi,

My name's Mike and I am over in Pittsburgh for 2 weeks in early August on a business trip. I will be based in Cranberry Twnshp.

I am after advice/suggestions for rides during the fortnight (midweek evenings perhaps?) and especially the weekend of 11/12th August as the thought of spending all the time holed up in a hotel is NOT my idea of fun.

A major snag is that I won't have a bike (way to expensive to ship mine over) so looking to hire/beg(!) for the use of one for the two weeks. Any decent hire places worth trying for a decent road bike? I am 5' 10" tall 73kg rider.

I race in the UK on the road, ideally looking for group rides with a stop as I don't know the area at all. I still have some events back home in September but any rides that do 16-18mph av. would be my cup of tea.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

I suspect someone more knowledgeable than me will be along eventually to give you more info, but I think there's a good chance you can find what you're looking for!

You just happened to pick an awesome time to come to Pittsburgh because our city's BikeFest is happening August 5-19, so there will be lots of rides and other bikey things happening every day. The calendar is still getting settled as different groups submit info about the events they are going to host, but the Google Calendar on this page shows some of the rides and events that will be happening. Some of the rides might be at too slow a pace for your preference, but I bet you'll be able to find something that suits you!

I've never rented from them myself, but the main rental place I know of is Golden Triangle Bike Rental. Other people may have some other ideas as well.

Thanks, I did spot the bikefest so will indeed check out what's going on.

For rental, thanks for the link to GOlden Triangle. Anyone on here have any idea of the standard of their road bike hires? I'm not expecting any carbon exotica by any means!

Thanks again,

Mike

Hi Mike,

I can't help you with a bike (mine would almost certainly be too big -- 60cm frame with a 130mm stem). But if you do find one and want a ride mid-week, send me a private message and we'll exchange emails. I work in Cranberry, and would probably be up for a ride during lunchtime or just after work.

Mike, I've passed your request to a couple of folks who lead rides in that area.

The bike museum surprised me at how American it was. Probably be a hoot for a European to see the stuff we rode in our childhoods here. And a bunch of other cool stuff, too. Bikes with wooden tires from the 19th century and all sorts of wheeled wonders.

Just had to come back on here, acknowledge and say a BIG thanks to all who responded and helped to get me fixed for the fortnight I spent in Pittsburgh – without which I would have been holed up in a lousy hotel room eating donuts!!

I managed to borrow a bike from a top bloke out of Cranberry who made me feel most welcome, couldn't do enough and who pretty much looked after me for the 13 days I was there. Thanks so much Lance.

I got to ride with several groups that knew how to ride and certainly didn’t hang around, again – made me feel welcome and took me under their wing. A big shout for Fred and his group rides from North Park.

I got to see plenty of Western PA that I might never have seen. What better way than to do this by bike. You have some great quiet roads out there (if you know where to find them!) and I have to say that, in general, the attitude of other road users pretty much mirrors the UK. You get a mix of good and bad, those that give you plenty of room and those that don’t.

Physical boundaries, colour, creed or language cannot break the bond that cyclists have around the world.

Thank you – yours in cycling

Mike

Next time well have to show you some of our single track. Pittsburgh is one of the unsung Meccas of mountain biking.
