Volunteers needed June 14 near Kennywood - trail maintenance

Volunteers are needed for trail maintenance on Sunday, June 14. Could you come out and help? The principal goal is to cut back shrubs that are encroaching along the sides of the Steel Valley Trail, narrowing the bikeable lane. You can park in Duquesne near the trail, then bike or walk to the work area. MEET: Sunday June 14 at 8am in the trail parking lot at Route 837 & Library Pl, Duquesne map: https://goo.gl/maps/LpOn0 BRING: pruners, gloves, water bottle, and perhaps bike & bike lock. Possibly also: shade hat, sunscreen. OPTIONAL: rake, hedge trimmer. Kids welcome. Note: there is some poison ivy along the trail. From the parking lot we’ll bike or walk, with implements, across Route 837 at the Grant Ave traffic light and then bike/walk the trail about 1.5 miles to below Kennywood, where we’ll spread out and work. Another way to get there is approach from the Pump House in Munhall. I expect most of us will work for 2-3 hours. If you come late, just proceed toward Kennywood along the trail; you’ll see us. -Paul Steel Valley Trail Council

I'm bringing some brownies to the trail maintenance event tomorrow morning. Come and get 'em! (come out any time between 7:30am and 11)

The Vahosky family is setting up a cross on the trail in memory of Ron, this morning, and we're dedicating a new bench in his name by the Whitaker Bridge. We've got two hedge trimmers cutting back at the brush right now, so we could use more hands to help this morning.

We had 10 people turn out for trail work today. Thanks! We cut back trail growth, as last time. But more memorably, Ron Vahosky's family set a cross in memory of him along the trail. And a bench was set up near the Whitaker Bridge (that's the first bridge over the RR tracks, when coming from Homestead). In the afternoon, the bench is in the shade, and it has a view across the river to Braddock, and it's a nice place to sit if you're waiting for a friend. Here are Ron's family and friend, Tom, Larry, Vanessa, Marion, and Russ on the new bench.
