An example of what prompted my post was the long stretch from the zoo down to the 62nd Street Bridge. That area is a free for all and people actually pass other cars sometimes. There is no white line or anything to indicate to drivers that it is a two lane road, not a 4 lane. Why is there no bike lane or at least a white line? It could be a safe stretch or road if they would paint something there. Also, there is no parking on the road up through the zoo. Why no white line or something to move drivers toward the middle more to give us a break? Thanks in advance, I just don't know what is involved.
311 it. Maybe if enough of us do, someone might take notice? That stretch is awful. I used to have to drive out that way to get to work and would always drive smack down the middle to prevent anyone from passing.
As a semi-related side note: has anyone ever proposed the idea of painting bike lanes in yellow? Some motorists tend to be a bit more squeamish about crossing yellow than white.
We've talked with the City a bunch about this. Everyone is on board with striping bike lanes, the complicated part (which isn't all that complicated, but adds time and money) is figuring out the parking along there. Currently people are parking on the sidewalk and on both sides of the street. In order to free up real estate the center line needs to be eradicated and replaced in a different location. Anyway, go ahead an put in the 311. It's good for the City to log complaints and recommendations for bikes.
Step one: go to store. Step 2: but spray paint. Step 3: bike lane.
