What should be done if there is no bike parking near by?

What should I lock my bike to if there is no parking racks nearby? Also, Bike parking racks have been around for at least 20 years. Why do many places still not have any? At South Hills village, there is a rack at the T station but not near any of the mall entrances. Should I lock it to the fence, a stop sign, or a tree?

Take 1: Being the idiot I am sometimes, I'd take the bike through the mall with me, and when security intervenes, say it's my skateboard. Take 2: Being the idiot I am sometimes, I'd take the bike through the mall with me, and when security intervenes, insist I speak with mall management, and further stand my ground and insist that they install a bike rack somewhere. Take 3: Lock my bike to a railing with a note indicating when I will return and if they would please just ignore the bike until then, I would much appreciate it. Take 4: I do not go to malls. If they will not accommodate my form of transportation, they do not get my business. Footnote: Ross Park Mall and South Hills Village are owned by Simon Properties, and are miserably difficult to work with. I haven't spent money in either one since before I bought something in a Wal-Mart, and that was in a year that began with a "1".

Locking to a tree is supposed to be bad for the tree, so I'd go with a sign or fence instead. Or you could just lock up at the T station and walk. I find there's so much walking required to get around inside a mall, adding the short walk to and from the T station isn't a big deal.

The main thing to do is to contact the store's costumer service and request a bike rack.

There's a good web page with collected info on use of and installation of bike racks in the city of Pittsburgh: http://localhost/resources/bike-parking/ The city used to have a web form through which you could request a bike rack at a particular location. What happened to that?

What about Perry Hwy. in West View and Ross as well as Main St. in Sharpsburg, Lincoln Ave. in Belleview; Greenfield Ave., and Murray Ave. in Greenfield; Chislett St., Greenwood St.,  and Morningside Ave. in Morningside; 2nd Ave. in Hazelwood.; W. Liberty Ave., and Potomac Ave. in Dormont; Broadway Ave., Fallowfield Ave., and Beechview Ave. in Beechview; 5th Ave., and Forbes Ave in Uptown; Freeport Rd. in Aspinwall, O'Hara Township, Blawnox, Harmar Township, Creighton, and Natrona Heights. Pittsburgh St. in Cheswick and Springdale. 6th Ave. 7th Ave., Corbet St. 1st Ave. in Tarentum; 4th Ave., 5th Ave., 2nd St., 7th St., 8th St., 9th St., 11th St., Freeport St., and Freeport Rd. in New Kensington; Leechburg Rd. in Lower Burrell. Ross: We're working on it. If in Pines Plaza, I lock to the shopping carts in front of Shop'n Save. The bank is OK with bringing it inside the first set of doors, effectively blocking that safe, but that's rarely an issue. West View: For Dunkin Donuts, I roll the bike inside. Plan B, I lock to the gas meter. In the plaza, if I was to employ the shopping cart trick, since there is so much foot traffic in front of Ggiant Eagle, I suggest locking to a single stray cart farther down past the bus stop and shoving it bike side first against the wall. Gas meters are a good Plan A. Avoid trees, and be wary of signs, which can be pulled up or unbolted quickly.

It would be nice to bike racks on the Perry Hwy near Belleview Rd., between Township Rd. and Highland Ave., between Harding Rd and St. John's Church as well as between Schars Ln. and Smith Dr. Some coat hanger racks should be installed at Pines Plaza and on Perry Hwy. between Oakridge Rd. and Prescott Dr. Perrysville Ave. between Baytree St and Waldorf street would be a good idea as well plus any business along McKnight Rd.

@zz, posting here doesn't do a thing. But if you track down the municipalities involved, or the store, and tell them about the need, politely, you could make it happen.
