I've never replaced my helmet pads - looking to buy some over the weekend. Anyone know/recommend where to go locally?
I have a Bell helmet, but I'm sure I can use a universal style.
Some manufacturers (Specialized for sure) sell replacement pads for some number of years after the helmet was made. My Specialized helmet is beyond that time frame though, and really needs new pads.
So, if anyone knows of a universal replacement or a source of that velcro-foam stuff they're made out of, do share.
Is it that someone supposed to replaced helmet after some years? I've heard about 3 to 5 due to foam deterioration and inability to protect.
Bell used to provide free replacements, but I think that program has been retired.
depending on the age of your helmet and how it has been treated, it might be time to consider replacing the whole thing.
I find that when the pads need replaced, it's probably a better idea just to replace the helmet. My helmets probably get replaced every 2 years.

Don't know. Have some friends with Phd in chemistry and physics. All of them told me that any kind of polymer deteriorates with time. UV is especially bad. Inhibitors could prolong life but not for ever.
Some company really needs to come up with washable pads, or just provide readily available disposable pads. Letting pads go until the helmet is done is very grotty.
I have one helmet where pads have velcro.
Every helmet I own, road, skate, xc, full face, all of them, have removable pads. Some machine washable, some hand washable, but all removable.
my uvex helmet does not have removable pads. it is getting pretty gross.
i have spare helmet pads laying about that i've foolishly torn out of helmets in the past. you can has.
My helmet came with replacement pads, but I think I lost them when I moved. As it gets hotter, and my head gets sweatier, I regret this more each day.
I'm going to ride to every bike shop in the city today until I find one that has pads. I should probably buy a few sets and swap them out - wash - wear - wash - wear. I've been rinsing or washing the old ones regularly. They're beat. Good day for a longish ride.

Take helmet in shower with you after riding
in extreme heat. shampoo pads.
Stitch around the perimeter of pads with
sewing machine so you can just wash them
without the liner coming off.
