VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PEDAL PITTSBURGH
The Community Design Center of Pittsburgh (www.cdcp.org) is gearing up for Volkswagen Pedal Pittsburgh 2002 ~ “City on a Roll”, scheduled for Sunday, May 19! Each year nearly 200 volunteers come together to share in the excitement and fun of our event. This year we hope to attract nearly 2200 cyclists and need the support of our volunteers more than ever before to help make the day a success.
The CDCP greatly appreciates your participation in this unique bicycle tour of Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods, architectural highlights, and design landmarks. Your efforts, in turn, support CDCP programs that help make a direct contribution in the revitalization of Pittsburgh neighborhoods.
Tasks include serving fruit and water at rest stops, helping with registration, serving as a ride guide, directing riders along routes as a course marshal and more. No matter which task you choose, you’re sure to have a great time, meet new people, and help make the event a success!
To volunteer, contact Jennifer Fox from CDCP via e-mail: jfox@cdcp.org. Jennifer can email you a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that shows the current volunteer needs.
For more information about Pedal Pittsburgh, simply visit: www.pedalpittsburgh.org
We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, May 19!
THE GREAT GEAR EXCHANGE
Sponsored by the North Country Trail Association (www.northcountrytrail.org/pa/) will be holding an outdoor Great Gear Exchange. This is swap and sale at the Marina Restaurant at Moraine State Park on April 13 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This is your opportunity to get rid of that old tent, find a new stove, look for a used bike, buy an extra paddle or just to clean up your gear closet and let somebody else have the opportunity to use it and go outdoors.ÊThere will be a small fee for participating or just attending, and that fee will include a raffle ticket on some gear. There will be representatives from outdoor companies and stores Eastern Mountain Sports, High Gear of Clarion are participating to give you a chance to talk with them and see what new stuff they have for sale. Come and meet members of the outdoor clubs.ÊSo mark this on your calendar. Please contact: nctpa@zbzoom.net. We hope to have a raffle and there will be food for sale. We will also be collecting old gear to be donated to a needy youth group. Come out and ride the bike trail or hike on the North Country Trail. “One man can make a difference and everyman should try.”

Granny Gear has organized two trail work weekends for folks who want to help get the course in shape for this year’s race, make some new friends and have fun in the process. Trail Work Weekend #1 is April 26th-28th and Trail Work Weekend #2 is May 3rd-5th at Silver Creek Resort, in Snowshoe, West Virginia. We’ve capped the number of volunteers to 60 per weekend. We have limited lodging, so it’s definitely first come, first served. If you plan to attend, please email your reply to: heygranny@grannygear.com or fax it to (304) 259-5596 by April 15th. Please list the names and arrival date(s) of everyone coming with you. Your ideas on how to improve the trail work effort will be greatly appreciated, so let us know. They really do make a difference. If you need to speak with us, call (304) 259-5533.
Mason-Dixon Resources 4th Annual Charity Dash for Cash
What is It? A technical yet fun loving mountain bike race where we raise money for our local Volunteer Fire Dept. Course and Food is provided by Mason Dixon Resources, a timber harvesting company, in conjunction with the Buffalo Riders a local riding group.
The entry fee of $25 includes: The bike race, Event t-Shirt, Food & Beverages following the race. Note: Because we serve alcohol at this function, we limit its participants to 21 and older.
The race course consists of a 13 mile loop loaded with bomb single track, lung busting climbs, hairy decents, stream crossings and even a few man made obstacles. We like to think of this as one of the area1s best and mostmemorable race courses.
Due to the technical nature of the course as well as the varied skill levels of its riders, the race is a time trial format with a staggered interval start. This helps to spread people out on the course and prevent potential bottlenecks on the singletrack.
Trophies are awarded to the top two finishers in each gender group as well as to the first place finisher on the short course.
Following the race, riders are encouraged to stick around and gorge themselves on barbecued beef and pork and enjoy your share of the donated spirits.
When: Saturday May 11, 2002. Start time 2PM. Please arrive at least one hour early for registration and riders meeting.
Where: 220 Iron Bridge Road, Freeport, PA.
For more information, questions about pre-riding the course or sponsorship opportunities call (724) 350-5961 and ask Jarvis.
