PASS THIS ISSUE ON!

This issue of The Spokesman contains lots of exciting updates for the cycling community! In particular, if you’re interested in commuting to work, this could be the issue that you’ve been waiting for! The initiatives that follow are all posted on the Bike-Pgh.org website, but it will take support from the biking community to ensure that our collective voices are heard, and the needs of the cycling communtity are understood. Please forward this issue of The Spokesman on to anyone that you wish!

URBAN CYCLING SHOWER SURVEY

One of the most frequently cited frustrations of cyclists who commute to work is the lack of access to shower facilities. Athletic Clubs all contain showers, but often the price of joining and monthly membership fees become cost prohibitive for cyclists who are looking for a place to clean up after a long ride. Bike-Pgh.org is putting together a proposal for Athletic Clubs that would permit cyclists to use just the shower facilities for a reduced monthly rate. If you’re interested, please take the short survey that is posted at www.Bike-Pgh.org and let us know what you think.

FIRST AVENUE BIKE AND BLADE STATION IN 2003

How about a place for commuters and recreational cyclists to store their bike, get a shower, rent a bike, get your bike fixed, and get local cycling information all in one spot? The City of Pittsburgh and several other organizations have proposed building a Bike and Blade (for skaters as well) Station adjacent to the First Avenue T-Station. Construction of this facility dedicated to cyclists and skaters could begin as early as the Spring of 2003. For more information, and to see a proposed drawing of the facility, point your web browser to www.Bike-Pgh.org ~ You can be kept up-to-date via email on this project by contacting Richard Meritzer from the City of Pittsburgh at: (richard.meritzer@city.pittsburgh.pa.us).

RIDE RACK ROLL – BIKES ON BUSES

The Port Authority has recently equipped 75 buses on 8 routes with bike racks. These racks will accomodate two bicycles, and cyclists on these routes can have their bikes transported at no additional cost! Currently, the eight routes with the “Ride Rack Roll” equipped buses are:

* 11D Perrysville
* 21A Coraopolis
* 71A Negley
* 54C North Side-Strip District-Oakland-South Side
* 77D Highland-Friendship
* 77F Morningside-Friendship
* 77G Stanton Heights-Friendship
* 500 Highland Park-Bellevue

FIND A RIDE BUDDY!

Many requests have come in from readers who are looking for a way to locate other cyclists who may want to go for recreational rides, train for an event, or commute to work. Bike-Pgh.org is pleased to announce that readers may now find a “Ride Buddy” by posting a listing or searching posted listings for folks who have similar biking interests. Listings will stay posted for 30 days, and can be found in the Community pages of the www.Bike-Pgh.org website.

CITY OF PITTSBURGH BIKING PLAN

The City of Pittsburgh has developed a Draft Cycling Plan that “…outlines a strategy for improving bicycling conditions in Pittsburgh while raising the profile of bicycling as a mode of transportation.” This 51-page document is available as a PDF download, and has been made available by the City of Pittsburgh. In addition to obtaining a copy of the Draft Plan from the City’s website, readers may also download the approximately 140K file from www.Bike-Pgh.org. Please take a few moments to download and read this important document; many of the City’s initiatives and goals are already underway!
