GREAT RIDE VOLUNTEERS WANTED
WE NEED YOU TO SUPPORT THE GREAT RIDE AND THE PITTSBURGH YOUTH HOSTELS!
The City of Pittsburgh Department of Parks and Recreation welcomes nearly 2,000 cyclists from all over western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia to the Great Ride July 28, 2002.
Cyclists of all ages and skill levels start at 8:00 a.m. from Technology Drive in downtown Pittsburgh. Choosing between courses of 5, 20, 30, and 50 miles, they travel across five bridges with breathtaking views of Pittsburgh. $2.00 from each registration is donated to the Pittsburgh Council, American Youth Hostels to support their two hostels in Pittsburgh and Ohiopyle State Park and support their outdoor recreation program. A couple of hours of your time can mean thousands of dollars and great publicity for the Pittsburgh Council.
As part of the agreement with Pittsburgh Citiparks, the Pittsburgh International Youth Hostel Agrees to provide volunteers for the following areas:
* Course Marshals ~ Minimum of 20 volunteers.
* AYH Rest Stop ~ Minimum of 3 volunteers to run rest stop.

SHARE THE ROAD LOGO ON ALL PENNDOT ENVELOPES
HARRISBURG (May 21) – PENNDOT has granted a request by the Bicycle Access Council (www.BicycleAccess-PA.org) to display a Share-the-Road logo on the reverse side of PENNDOT mailing envelopes, Deputy Secretary Betty Serian announced today.
The use of the logo is to recognize the legitimate use by bicyclists of Pennsylvania roadways, Serian said.
“With another cycling season upon us it is even more important that bicyclists and motorists share the road safely,” said Serian. “By adding the Share-the-Road logo to the reverse side of our mailing envelope we hope to make driving and riding safer for everyone.”
Envelopes with the logo were distributed beginning this month.
“It’s a simple way to educate motorists and bicyclists,” said Joe Stafford, executive director of the Bicycle Access Council. He said PENNDOT has been very cooperative in accommodating the needs of bicyclists in accordance with the Vehicle Code.
A copy of this Press Release and a sample of the Share The Road logo can be found on the www.Bike-Pgh.org website in the News & Events section as well as on the Bicycle Access Council (www.BicycleAccess-PA.org) website (go to the “News” section and find the May 21 Press Release).
SHOWERS FOR COMMUTERS SURVEY
Haven’t taken the survey, but interested in commuting to work and getting a shower? Take the survey now! So far, we’ve received surveys from dozens on readers who are interested in commuting, or have already committed to arriving to and from work sweaty and in shape. The goal of the survey is to gain a better understanding of the frequency and locations of urban commutes. A proposal is currently being put together to local Athletic Clubs that would enable urban commuters to use their shower facilities at a reduced rate relative to normal Club membership. Go to www.Bike-Pgh.org to take the survey; please pass this along to anyone that you believe would benefit form this proposed progam.
