INVITATION FOR EAST CORRIDOR TRANSIT PLANNING INPUT
This invitation has been extended by Sutainable Pittsburgh’s (www.SustainablePittsburgh.org) Urban Cycling Committee. The Port Authority and Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, along with Westmoreland County Transit Authority are undertaking a year-long planning effort to identify transportation needs and potential public transit improvements within a study area that extends from Downtown Pittsburgh to Greensburg, Allegheny north shore northeast to New Kensington, and the south shore of the Monongahela southeast to Clairton.
The purpose of this Study is to identify transportation needs and develop transit solutions. The goal is to build on existing public transit infrastructure and systems while improving mobility, fostering economic development, considering environmental impacts and utilizing existing transportation resources. Potential transit alternatives include improvements in existing bus service, busway/light rail extensions and/or improvements and commuter rail service on existing railroad rights-of-way.
The Consultant team completing this Study effort invites the bicycle and pedestrian communities to share impressions of the transportation issues and opportunities in the Study area.
A special input meeting is scheduled discussion of pedestrian and bicycle issues, to be held on Thursday, September 5, 2002, 11:30 – 1:00 p.m., Regional Enterprise Tower, 23rd Floor, O’Neil Room (bring a bag lunch). We encourage you to attend this meeting.
If you plan to attend, please RSVP to: info@sustainablepittsburgh.org
More information on the Eastern Corridor Transit Study is available at: http://www.portauthority.org/ects/index.htm
As follow-up to the meeting, the Sustainable Pittsburgh Urban Cycling Committee will prepare and submit a letter of recommendations to the agencies. In preparation for the meeting on September 5th, please include with your RSVP your initial thoughts on issues, needs, and opportunities. We look forward to both your input and seeing you there!
PREVENTING BICYCLE THEFT
What can you do to prevent bicycle theft? What can you do if a bike is stolen? Many people don’t think about these questions until it is too late. This article provides some basic advice for cyclists and parents.
First and foremost, get a bike lock. Locks are available from your local bicycle shop, sporting goods store, or large retailer (think ‘Target’ or similar store). Locks come in two basic varieties; a simple chain with lock, and a harder to “defeat” U-Lock. The U-Lock is recommended, as it typically comes with a steel cable that can help to secure one or both wheels in addition to keeping the bike locked against a rack, fence, meter, etc. Simple chain locks can be purchased for as little as $10, the more substantial U-Locks range from $15-$45 – a small price to pay for an expensive bicycle. Most U-Locks come with a holster that allows you to store the lock on the bike frame when not in use.
Second, record the serial number of the bike when you first purchase it. Serial numbers can be found on the frame either as a sticker (on less expensive bikes) or engraved (on the more expensive bikes).
Third, if you have a homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy, you should insure your bike. This can be done for only a few extra dollars a year. In the event that your bike is stolen, obtain a police report and report it to your insurance carrier. Give the police the serial number of the bike – it may come in handy if a bike is recovered that has been repainted or modified.
Finally, if you ever leave your bike unattended, or think that you’re going someplace where your bike may be left unattended, bring your lock. Most thefts can be prevented by simply securing your bike. There is nothing more enticing to a thief than stealing somthing that they don’t have to carry, can move quickly on, and is difficult to prove ownership of. The bicycle is that perfect object.
