BIKE TO WORK WEEK EVENTS

Bike To Work Week is almost here! We’ve lined up some great events for anyone who wants to participate. Complete details can be found on the Bike Pittsburgh website. Below is a short list of some things you might not want to miss!

* If you’re planning to commute to work any (or all) days from May 12th to May 16th, you can get a FREE shower at the Downtown Athletic Club. Simply call them the week prior to ensure that they can accomodate everyone. Telephone: (412) 560-FITT.

* There will be two Urban Advocacy Rides on May 4th and May 11th. These rides will cover the Northside on the 4th, and the East End on the 11th. The last Urban Advocacy Ride a couple of weeks ago had nearly 30 participants! The Rides will be led by Bike Pittsburgh’s Lou Fineberg, author of Three Rivers On Two Wheels. The ride is free, however, a $5 donation to The Western Pennsylvania Field Institute (www.wpfi.org) is suggested. Rides will be between 25-30 miles. The Northside Ride on the 4th includes two long fairly steep hills. Helmets REQUIRED.

* On Friday, May 9th, the National Bicycle Greenway Reception will be held at noon in Market Square, Downtown. Several Pittsburgh riders will be riding in this relay, which highlights a continuous route from Washington, D.C. to Santa Cruz, California. RIDERS ARE NEEDED to escort the D.C. to Pittsburgh Team to the Reception! If you would like to participate, contact Michael Sobkowiak at WPFI: (msobkowiak@wpfi.org). For information on the relay, visit: (www.bikeroute.com/NationalMayorsRide/index.html).

* On Friday, May 16th, there will be a FREE breakfast for all bicycle commuters, Downtown, at the City-County Building, from 7:30am – 9:30am. Breakfeast is being generously provided by Friends of the Riverfront (www.friendsoftheriverfront.org).

* Claim your Bragging Rights! Bike Pittsburgh would like to publish a list of all organizations and individuals who will be commuting to work from May 12th to May 16th. Send us an email with the following information: Teams Participants (if a group is riding in from the same organization), or Individual Name (if it’s just you), and the total number of days, with mileage for each day that were cycled. We’ll try to get this into one of the local newspapers as part of the follow-up to Bike To Work Week 2003! Send your information to: (submit@bike-pgh.org).

* Participants in Bike To Work Week 2003 may pick coupons for FREE Season Tickets to the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Film Festival, held in July, at the following events: May 10th – Pedal Pittsbugh Cycling Clinic, May 11th – Urban Neighborhood Bike Tour/Advocacy Ride, May 12 – Urban Bike Tour – Riverfront Trails, May 15th – Mountain Biking Clinic and Beginner’s Ride, May 16th – Bicycle Commuter’s Breakfast at City-County Building, Downtown. Complete information on these events can be found on the Bike Pittsburgh website: www.Bike-Pgh.org.

PEDAL PITTSBURGH 10 – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Preparations for Pedal Pittsburgh 10, one of Pittsburgh’s premier cycling events each year, are well underway, and we need your help to make sure that this is the best year yet! Each year NEARLY 200 VOLUNTEERS are needed to help make this event a success. All Volunteers get a FREE T-shirt and lunch. Ride Guides do not have to pay the Registration Fee to ride in event. Please consider Volunteering your time for any of the following activities:

* Ride Guides Needed for the 25 – 35 mile rides. We’re looking for about 6 – 8 individuals who will take groups of riders out on a guided tour of Pittsburgh. To Volunteer, contact Jennifer Fox via email at: (jfox@cdcp.org) or by telephone: (412) 391-4144.

* Film Crew Needed to assist with creation of a Promotional spot for next year’s Pedal Pittsburgh. Whatever your skill – editing, filming, sound, etc., we need your help! Contact Tara Merenda via email at: (tamerenda@hotmail.com). Contact Tara if you have equipment that we might be able to use during the event or post-production!

* Here are some of the other Volunteer needs: Packet Stuffing, Registration, Rest Stops, Course Marshalls, and more! To Volunteer, contact Jennifer Fox via email at: (jfox@cdcp.org) or by telephone: (412) 391-4144.

We hope you can help! For more information on Pedal Pittsburgh, visit: (www.pedalpittsburgh.org).

FREE RIDE 24 HOURS OF WRENCHING

This event is sponsored by Free Ride. Free Ride recycles used bikes and makes them available to those who would like one through several methods: dontation, trade, or participation in repair of Free Ride’s other bicycles. They’re looking for people to help them get a basement full of bikes (in all states of disrepair) ready for Summer. All skill levels wecome! Bring your tools if you have ’em. Food and coffe provided. Work as much as you can, and listen to several live bands, including Human Brains and Aphasia.

For more information, email: erokore@hotmail.com.

BIKE COMMUTER SURVEY

Do you commute to work? We asked this same question last year, however, at the time there were 400 less people on our mailing list. We’d like to get updated information now that we have three times as many people who directly receive this newsletter. If you do commute, please send us a short note to: submit@bike-pgh.org. Include:

* Average numbers of days per week you commute
* Total distance (round trip)
* Where you commute to and from

We hope to hear from you!
