MORE BIKE LANES (HOPEFULLY) COMING SOON TO PITTSBURGH!

The City of Pittsburgh is moving forward with the request to install more bike lanes! A Consultant is in the process of being hired by the City to assist with the necessary paperwork and research required to have these lanes put into place. A copy of the letter from the Mayor’s Office which was sent to the Sustainable Pittsburgh (www.SustainablePittsburgh.org) Urban Cycling Committee in response to this request can be found in the Safety & Awareness section of the Bike Pittsburgh website.

Representatives of the City at a recent Urban Cycling Committee Meeting indicated that there is a goal to install up to five bike lanes before the end of the City’s painting season, which ends on November 1st. Progress and location of these new bike lanes will be reported when we have updated information. There is a suggested list of places to locate bike lanes in the original letter to the Mayor’s Office from the Urban Cycling Committee; it can also be found in the Safety & Awareness section of the Bike Pittsburgh website. This is a huge step foward for the City of Pittsburgh, and a very important amenity for local cyclists. Bike Pittsburgh thanks the other members of the Urban Cycling Committee and the City of Pittsburgh for moving this critical issue for safe cycling conditions forward!

WE MADE IT – WE’RE 173 MEMBERS STRONG!

The final numbers are in, and we not only met our goal of 150 new Members, but we exceeded it by nearly 25! We are stonger as an organization with your support, and we’ll continue to keep fighting for continually improving cycling conditions and amenities here in Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh Region.

We’re planning some great activities – both social and advocacy-related – for this Summer. Details will be forthcoming in the next issue of The Leader. Additionally, be sure to look for updates on the City’s bike lane progress, the bike map that we’re helping to publish, and installation of cool new Bike Pittsburgh bike racks all around the City.

BICYCLE PATH NETWORK FOR CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP

Richard Miller wants to have a bike path network installed in Cranberry Township, and he’s looking for some help. Richard began this process in the early 1980’s when he was on the Planning Commission. The goal was to facilitate kids getting to schools, parks, and activities safely as well as adults commuting to work. Building on this original idea, Richard is moving forward with this vision as well as the goal of ultimately linking with other bike paths in the future.

Richard is starting by updating the plan to match the April, 2003 street data. Additionally, the Brush Creek Watershed Association is looking into a path near the creek through Thorn Hill Industrial Park. Cranberry is acquiring some land along the same watercourse.

Input from anyone who has plowed the same ground would be appreciated. Lots of disciplines are involved: engineering, planning, construction, financing, management, etc. If you would like to help Richard, (and he would really appreciate the help!), you may contact him at the following methods: Email – (rickmyoga@yahoo.com), Postal Mail – 409 Leatherbark, Cranberry Township, PA 16066-4765, or Telephone – (724) 321-7085.
