SECOND ANNUAL LAUREL MOUNTAIN BIKE FESTIVAL

Tweak your suspensions, lube your chain and get ready for the 2nd Annual Laurel Mountain Bike Festival! Just to make the weekend even more interesting, you can compete in log-pulling contests and the infamous Huffy Toss Championship – or just watch. And if that’s not enough, there will be live music with Chai Baba, microbrews, camping, and a pig roast! This weekend will be so filled with stuff to do that you will have to call in “sick” Monday just to recover.

Here are a few extra details for the weekend schedule:

* Group rides will range from beginner to EPIC level (intermediate/expert, minimum 5 hours)
* There is a scheduled “women only” group ride
* A ride each day will caravan over to Laurel Mountain for those interested
* Mountain Bike PA voted the local single track the best in Pennsylvania!
* Even more virgin single track has been created and awaiting your arrival
* There is a BASH scheduled (scavenger hunt bike ride – find the beer!)
* Besides the scheduled Huffy Toss and Log Pull competitions there will be a Fix-a-flat Showdown on Friday night
* Excellent prize giveaways all weekend!
* Free 22oz beer mug for the first 200 registered

HELP TEACH BIKE SAFETY

A frequent question asked of Bike Pittsburgh is, “What can I do to help?” Bike Pittsburgh has partnered with The Pittsburgh Helmet Coalition (www.pghhelmetcoalition.org) to help educate children and parents about bike safety. Each year the Coalition relies almost entirely on Volunteers such as yourself to distribute hundreds of free helmets to children, while teaching both parents and children about bike safety. Please consider donating a few hours of your time to this very worthy cause.

For more information, or to Volunteer for one of these opportunities below, contact Marcia Eustice, Program Coordinator (meustice61@aol.com). It is not necessary to be able to complete an entire “shift” – any help during these times are greatly appreciated!

* Observation Surveys – Every year the Coalition collects data in neighborhoods around Pittsburgh which tracks helmets usage. Volunteers are needed to observe helmet usage in various local Pittsburgh neighborhoods, and record the number of children who are (or are not) wearing helmets while riding bikes, scooters, and skateboards.

* Saturday July 26th ~ Northside Festival. Volunteers are needed from 11:00am – 6:00pm to assist with helmet fittings, present educational materials to parents and kids, and run the “Wheel Wise” game.

* Saturday/Sunday July 26th & 27th ~ The Great Ride. 3 to 5 Volunteers are needed from 6:00am- 11:00am to assist with helmet fittings, present educational materials to parents and kids, and run the “Wheel Wise” game.
