HOT METAL BRIDGE REWORK & CARSON STREET WIDENING OPEN HOUSE

Here’s some really important news for cyclists who utilize the South Side trails, Eliza Furnace Trail, and commute Downtown from the South Side:

The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, in collation with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, invites you to attend an Open House Public Meeting to update you on two different transportation projects – the East Carson Street Widening and the Extension and Rehabilitation of the Hot Metal Bridge Projects.

Attendees will receive an update on the current status of the projects, learn about environmental studies being completed, present preliminary environmental findings, receive public input and receive input regarding Section 106 (cultural resources) information. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the projects.

Event Day: Wednesday, August 18th
Event Location: I.B.E.W. Local Union #5, 5 Hot Metal Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203
Event Time: 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Cost: $FREE

HAZARDOUS ROADS SURVEY

The City of Pittsburgh is collecting input on hazardous road conditions from cyclists who use the city streets in an effort to prioritize the routes commonly used by cyclists clean and safe. If you cycle in Pittsburgh, please take a few moments and respond to this short survey:

1. Please list the top three streets on which you cycle.
2. Do you feel that these streets are adequately maintained and free of debris?
3. If not, which streets need better care?
4. Do you have problems cycling on the streets because of rocks, twigs or other debris?
5. If so, which streets need the most urgent attention?
6. Any additional input that will help assist us in the upkeep of Pittsburgh’s “Share The Road” bicycle routes?

Email your responses to Henry Pyatt, City of Pittsburgh, Department of Planning: (Henry.Pyatt@city.pittsburgh.pa.us).

FREE RIDE! SHOP UPDATE

Our Free Ride! recycled bike program continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. Volunteers have finished constructing a storage loft and installing shop lighting. Record numbers of volunteers are donating their time and skills to repair and recycle bikes. Free Ride! has more than doubled in size and capacity in the past year!

This tremendous growth that we have been experiencing also means that we are continually seeking items to complete our shop. You can help us build a better shop by donating any of the following items:

* Large White Board
* Bike Stands
* Tools
* Bike Racks for both autos and free-standing
* Bike Hooks
* Electrical and Plumbing Skills (our shop “needs fixed!”)

If you can donate any of these items, please email Free Ride! at: (freeride@bike-pgh.org). Complete information and directions to our Free Ride! recycled bike program are on the Bike Pittsburgh website in the “Free Ride!” area.
