HOT METAL BRIDGE UPDATE
The first round of funding to retrofit the Hot Metal Bridge has become available, and this is great news for cyclists! Currently, the Hot Metal Bridge connects the South Side with Second Avenue. The retrofit will include a bike and pedestrian connector directly to the Eliza Furnace Trail. This connector would be accessible directly from the Eliza Furnace Trail as a flyway over Second Avenue extending alongside the length of the current span. Access from Second Avenue would be via a ramp which takes you onto the new span. The South Side end of the bridge features a series of broad, circular switchbacks designed to take cyclists from street level on to the new span.
Approximately 100 people were present on August 18th to review the retrofit design and provide feedback, and this included representatives from Bike Pittsburgh. Construction is expected to last approximately one year, meaning that this important connection for commuters, recreational riders, and pedestrians could be available in the 2005/2006 time frame. As Bike Pittsburgh obtains updates on the project progress, we will let you know.
NEW “MAPS & BROCHURES” SECTION OF BIKE PITTSBURGH WEBSITE
Bike Pittsburgh is pleased to announce that there is a new section of the website just for regional cycling maps and brochures. You can download these maps and brochures in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. They’re all free, and have been provided by local agencies for your use. The first couple of maps and brochures are available now; stop by and check them out! We’ll be adding more as they become available to us.
2ND ANNUAL HAUNTED HALLOWEEN BIKE RIDE
This event is sponsored by and benefits Bike Pittsburgh. Join us for the Annual Halloween Haunted Bike Ride! This easy-paced ride will take us all over Pittsburgh to various haunted buildings. We’ll be making plenty of stops to tell stories and give local haunted history. This will be a different ride from last year, so you won’t hear the same ghost stories again! This is a fully supported ride with treats and drinks provided along the way. Participants are encouraged to ride in costume, but please make sure that you wear something that will not get caught in your wheels or chain, and that does not impair your normal field of vision. Helmets are required – but you can always decorate them! This ride benefits Bike Pittsburgh – we’re trying to keep the streets from getting too “scary” when it’s not Halloween. Come out and enjoy a pleasant evening of stories and legend while helping to support an important local cause. Please bring a bike light if you have it; loaners available with advance notice.
