COLD WEATHER READING – 750 MILES BY BICYCLE IN 86 HOURS

Can you imagine bicycling 750 miles in less than four days? Local bicyclist David Huggins-Daines took the challenge earlier last summer. Here is an excerpt of David’s incredible experience:

“This past summer, I participated in the yearly Boston-Montreal-Boston 1200km (750 mile) randonnee (http://www.geocities.com/b-m-b/). BMB (as it’s usually called) is an organized ride, like Pedal Pittsburgh or TOSRV, where you ride through scenic countryside, eating copious amounts of catered food and enjoying the company of fellow bicycle enthusiasts. There are just two small differences: first, the ride is 750 miles long. Second, there is a time limit of 90 hours to complete the ride, and the clock doesn’t stop when you get off the bike, even to sleep. There are designated control points where you must check in and have a card stamped with the time of arrival. These have basic sleeping arrangements and food, but otherwise the ride is unsupported (although you can have someone meet you at the control points, as Mary Jo, my wonderfully supportive girlfriend, did).

This style of riding, usually called randonneuring or randonneur riding, originated (as with many things bicycle-related) in France, where the 1200km Paris-Brest-Paris ride (http://www.rusa.org/pbp.html or http://www.audax-club-parisien.com/) has been held since 1891. It can best be described as timed but non-competitive riding over long distances with required minimum and maximum speeds, where riders are expected to be self-sufficient (rather than having a team support vehicle following them, handing them food and water, for example).”
