BIKEFEST! 2005 WRAP-UP
Pittsburgh made history last month with our first-ever BikeFest! This 10-day festival of all things bicycling drew over 2,000 participants, and by all measures, was a complete success.
“Nice work on Bike Fest,” said one participant, Brad Quartuccio. “It was amazing. I’m a life-long Pittsburgh cyclist and something like this wasn’t possible three years ago, and wasn’t imaginable six or seven back. The whole thing makes me euphoric knowing it happened and will only build from here.”
We’re already starting to think about BikeFest! 2006, and have plenty of great ideas for next year. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all of the dozens of volunteers who put in many hours designing, organizing, and leading BikeFest! events. Generous support for BikeFest! was provided by the Sprout Fund (www.sproutfund.org) with supporting sponsorship from Dirt Rag Magazine (www.dirtragmag.com). Additional sponsorship was provided by Planet Bike (www.planetbike.com), and The Ride Magazine (www.theride.com).
DUCK HOLLOW TRAIL REPORT
Bike Pittsburgh member Andrea McHugh reports that sections of the Duck Hollow Trail have significantly degraded to the point where bicyclists could be seriously injured if they do not pay attention to the trail. Several areas of the trail have significant buckling of the pavement and/or drops. As the trail is fairly well shaded even during a sunny day, bicyclists are not advised to use the trail in this condition during low-light conditions.
The City of Pittsburgh has been notified about the condition of the trail, and will be looking into it, shortly. Once the trail has been repaired, we will send out another notice. For more information on Duck Hollow, visit: (http://shaw-weil.com/supplement/Upper Monongahela.htm). If you would like more information on the specific areas of the trail which are dangerous, contact Andrea at: (Andrea4211008@aol.com) or call: (412) 421-0327.
