DONATE TO BIKE PGH BY RIDING YOUR BIKE!

Here is a great chance to donate $10 to Bike PGH by simply riding your bike – and it won’t cost you a thing!. REI is donating $10 for every bicyclist who rides to their new store in the South Side Works (412 South 27th Street, off of East Carson). Bike PGH will be providing FREE valet parking to all bicyclists who arrive. Additionally, bicyclists will receive a FREE Topeak Toolbar ($15 value) courtesy or REI (quantities are limited).

REI’s Grand Opening is October 7th, 8th, and 9th. See the flyer on our Home Page, or visit REI at: (http://www.rei.com). Please pass this along to anyone and everyone who believes in strong bicycle advocacy in Pittsburgh! The more bicyclists who show up, the more money donated to Bike PGH; more money means a stronger advocacy organization and safer streets for you!

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS! (REI DONATES TO BIKE PGH)

Bike PGH needs lots of Volunteers to help us valet park bikes for the REI Grand Opening from October 7th through 9th (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). REI will donate $10 to Bike PGH for every bike which we park, and we need to staff this event for three days.

No special skills are necessary; we’ll have everything you’ll need. We just need you to bring a willingness to work for 3-4 hours on one (or several) of these days. If you’ve been looking for an easy way to get involved, this is it! Your work will help us to raise thousands of dollars!

We especially need volunteers on Saturday, October 8th and Sunday, October 9th!

For more information, a list of available shifts, or to sign up, email David Hoffman (david@bike-pgh.org). We look forward to seeing you!

CONGRESS PASSES SAFETEA-LU – BICYCLISTS WIN BIG!

Recently, Congress passed the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act-Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). This is the third incarnation of a Federal transportation bill that renews every six years. Since 1991, hundreds of millions of dollars have been made available through this bill for bicyclists and pedestrians. The most recent bill went through more than a year of extensions while the final details were hammered out.

Under SAFETEA-LU, $612 million for Safe Routes to School, $370 million for Recreational Trails, and $893 million for Transportation Enhancements have been made available. This money will be spread across the U.S. over a six-year period. Bike PGH is already applying for portions of this funding.

The battle to keep significant funding for bicyclists and pedestrians was fought at the grass-roots level, and it is always under threat when the bill renews. Bike PGH thanks everyone who has taken the time to contact their local legislator, write a letter, call a Congressperson, or help in some way to get this important transportation bill passed.

SPC PEDESTRIAN BICYCLE MEETING AND OPEN HOUSE – SEPTEMBER 26, 2005

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) will be hosting a meeting of the Pedestrian Bicycle Committee on Monday, September 26, 2005. This meeting will begin at 3:00pm. Following the formal meeting, and starting at approximately 4:30pm., SPC will host an Open House to solicit input from the general public on pedestrian and bicycle issues, needs and opportunities in the region. All interested parties are invited to participate in the formal meeting as well as the subsequent Open House. If your schedule does not permit attendance at the 3:00 meeting, please feel free to attend between 4:30 and 7:00 to share your ideas, concerns and enthusiasm.

These public meetings are held only a couple of times per year. The meeting will be held on the 23rd Floor of the Regional Enterprise Tower (425 Sixth Avenue), Downtown.

MCKINNEY WOODS BIKE TRAIL IN NORTH PARK NOW OPEN

On September 21, 2005 Allegheny County and the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy opened the McKinney Woods Bike Trail in North Park. This trail, a part of the Harmony Trails network, begins at a parking area at the end of Booker Drive, off McKnight Road (SR 19) behind Wexford Plaza shopping center. It extends 2700 feet up to the Soccer Field parking area off McKinney Road.

The trail runs up a slight grade and curves through a peaceful, lightly wooded area. Users may park at the edge of North Park off McKnight Road. They may then walk or bike into the park causing minimal disturbance and traffic in the park. Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy first suggested building the trail as a connection between North Park and its Harmony Trail being developed in the Wexford Run Valley. Trail users may use Brooker Drive, cross McKnight Road at the traffic signal, and then coast down Brooktree Drive to Wexford Run.

NAME PITTSBURGH’S PROPOSED EAST END BIKE LOOP

The City of Pittsburgh is proud to boast that it has over twenty miles of trails surrounding the City. The newest addition to the City’s expansive trails is the East End Loop. The “loop” will connect the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers and along the way tie together three historic parks – Highland Park, Mellon Park and Frick Park. However, there is one small thing missing from the “loop” – a name.

Please e-mail us your suggested name for the “loop”, along with your contact information, by sending an e-mail to: (namethattrail@city.pittsburgh.pa.us). The deadline for submitting a name for the trail is October 1, 2005. Full information on the “Name The Trail” Campaign may be found at: (http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/trails/namethetrail.html).

DUCK HOLLOW TRAIL UPDATE

As reported by the City of Pittsburgh: A portion of the Duck Hollow trail, several hundred linear feet; between the Glenwood Bridge and the Homestead High Level Bridge is closed to the public due to safety concerns. There has been subsidence of the embankment between the trail and the railroad tracks [CSX has been notified] and of the riverbank itself (upon which the trail is located). The City of Pittsburgh geotechnical engineers are currently preparing a report with repair recommendations. Depending on the extent of repairs and subsequent cost, the City anticipates that portion of the trail will be closed immediately and certainly through Fall 2005.

Note: the public can still access the length of the trail (approximately 7/10 mile) between the Duck Hollow parking lot and the closed portion.
