Trading Ads for Bikes

An interesting idea for sure. JC Decaux, the second largest outdoor ad company in the world behind Clear Channel is offering hundreds of specially adapted bikes and racks to cities in turn for contracts to install more ad-based bus shelters. Maybe Pittsburgh could work out a similar deal with AdShell, the subsidiary of Clear Channel who provides Pittsburgh’s shelters.

Bikes aren’t free – people must register first with a credit card and pay a deposit to discourage theft. I think that’s a decent idea as long as the deposit is affordable even for those with limited income. Link

Those rent-a-bikes are in Lyon, France. They are pretty sweet bikes with integrated generator lights and internal-gear hubs, and there are about 300 Vélo-stations around the city: http://www.velov.grandlyon.com/

Unfortunately they don’t work with foreign credit cards :(
