Gasoline mileage estimates to decline next year

EPA making fuel figures more realistic

From staff and wire reports

Lee Lippert has never believed the mileage estimates he reads on brand-new cars — especially domestic models.

“The mileages never reflect reality,” said Mr. Lippert, a Carrick native who was browsing for a new Dodge truck for the Bakery Barn in Mount Pleasant.

The Dodge truck he was driving for his boss has a 38-gallon tank and on recent trips to Boston and back the vehicle had to be refueled three times each way. Mr. Lippert’s mission yesterday was to trade it in for a smaller, more fuel efficient quad-cab pickup.

“It was sucking gas,” said Mr. Lippert. “But the stickers never tell the truth. I have never believed them.”

He might just have to start having faith in the Environmental Protection Agency because next year EPA mileage estimates on cars, trucks and sport utility vehicles will actually begin reflecting the way people actually drive.

I can definitely appreciate that mileage ratings for vehicles don’t reflect reality – but the blame isn’t entirely on the car companies, people should really learn to drive in a manner that will help them to achieve those mileages.

More gradual accelerations, sticking to speed limits and not trying to drag race for pink slips will help to keep their tanks fuller longer.
