Bush wants oil consumption to drop 20 percent in ten years

In his State of the Union speech last night, President Bush called for a technological fix to our addiction to foreign oil. He is calling on new stricter fuel economy standards for cars and trucks beginning in 2010 and 2012 respectively, and heightened production of alternative fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel. One thing conspicuously absent was calling on Americans to try to use less fuel by taking fewer trips by car and more by public transit, biking, and walking. Just replacing one percent of passenger vehicle trips with bicycle or walking trips would save us over 29.2 Million barrels of oil per year*. That translates to 1,226,400,000 gallons of oil per year.

Here’s a pretty cool calculator to see how much gas and money you can save by riding your bike to work instead of driving. While you’re at it, you can also calculate your recommended bike size using an inseam measurement.

The 20% is based on projected use, not today’s use. Factoring in increases for “projected” use the cut is closer to 1.5% based on today’s numbers.

The League of American Bicyclists just published their response to Bush’s speech. It’s a good read.

“The best way to zero out carbon dioxide emissions is not to make them in the first place. We’re not suggesting everyone give up their car or truck and start bicycling 30 miles to work each day,â€? says Andy Clarke, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “But the reality is that more than one-quarter of all U.S. trips are one mile or less, and right now most of those trips are made by car.”
