GREENWAY SOJOURN 2007
When: June 23-30, 2007
Where: Along the Great Allegheny Passage in Maryland and Pennsylvania
Created by: Rails-to-Trails Conservancy with the Allegheny Trail Alliance
Finishing in Pittsburgh, Greenway Sojourn 2007 travels the longest multi-purpose trail in the nation. After 20 years of trail building, the Great Allegheny Passage in southwestern Pennsylvania and western Maryland is now linked to the popular C & O Canal Towpath. Join 499 friendly fellow riders on this trek from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh. A free shuttle bus from Pittsburgh to the start and long-term parking at Station Square are included in the registration fee.
The scenic C & O Canal Towpath features many surviving locks, lock houses and aqueducts. At its terminus in Cumberland, Md., the ride will continue on the Great Allegheny Passage, a gently graded, quasi-wilderness trail with friendly rural towns, as well as spectacular mountain vistas, views of the rushing Youghiogheny River and the dramatic engineering of bridges, tunnels and viaducts.
Cycling the newly linked route is a dream of many bicyclists. Organized in tandem with the Allegheny Trail Alliance (the group that built the Great Allegheny Passage), the 2007 Sojourn will officially celebrate the trail's completion.
Registration includes 22 catered meals, entertainment, luggage transport, outdoor camping facilities, shower truck, maps, shuttle from Pittsburgh to the start in Washingtonâ€â€and the camaraderie of your fellow riders.
