Major Trail Access Road in Serious Disrepair – Send Thank Yous!

Update as of 7/18/08: The City has finished paving Neville. Thank you for helping to make it happen. Now please thank the city by calling 3-1-1 (or 412-255-2621 by cell). Please email Councilman Peduto for all he did to get this major trail connection paved.

Here are a few photos of the street. Smooth as a baby’s bottom, sporting a half dozen share the road signs, ad two instructional signs for cyclists on how to safely cross the tracks.

Update as of 4/25/08: The City reports that Neville is to be repaved in the next week! Thanks everyone for calling the Mayor’s 3-1-1 line and a big thanks to Councilman Peduto for his letter to DPW back in October and again on April 10th, 2008 addressing all these issues, and getting it on the paving schedule. And thanks to the Mayor as well for making sure this gets done.

Update as of 10/11/07: Thanks for your letters and phone calls everyone, the City is listening. A few potholes have been filled which hasn’t changed the conditions much, but the overgrowth has been cut down which gives better sight lines and allows cyclists to ride over the right hand side a bit more. The best is yet to come – As of today, Councilman Peduto has written a letter to the Director of Public Works requesting that the street be repaved from Joncaire up, the shoulder cleared of gravel and debris, and restriped adding more of a shoulder. He also requested more speed limit signs and “Share the Road” signage. Furthermore, he asked that bike access be integrated underneath the railroad bridge, and striping and/or signage to make it clear to cyclists how to cross the tracks. Thanks again for speaking up and contacting the necessary people. Please thank Councilman Peduto for his efforts!

UPDATE! Here is an article in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review about fixing this, thanks to your help!

Original Post from September 19, 2007:

Neville Street in Oakland, which serves as a major thoroughfare for cyclists accessing the Panther Hollow Trail, is in desperate need of 1) repaving 2) debris and overgrowth removal from what little shoulder exists 3) restriping to outline actual travel lanes and clearly show the preferred 90 degree angle crossing at the train tracks for cyclists and 4) signage to “share the road” and “watch for bicyclists” and even “slow”.

If you use this road to access the trail please call 3-1-1 and Councilman Peduto’s office to request that it be repaved and made more bicycle friendly.
