The Jewish Healthcare Foundation is giving $250,000 to help finish a section of the Great Allegheny Passage.

The five-year grant to the Regional Trail Corp. will help complete the Steel Valley section of the trail as part of Pittsburgh’s 250th anniversary. The Great Allegheny Passage is a hiking and biking trail that snakes through Western Pennsylvania into Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Some of the money will be used to renovate a footbridge as part of Pittsburgh 250 & Fit, an initiative with the goal of getting 250,000 southwestern Pennsylvania residents to commit to regular exercise.

I believe that this they are talking about the bridge over the tracks at Whitaker which would connect the 2 mile Coke Gas Pipeline section to the Waterfront. (40.40310 -79.88020) This bridge is visible from the Rankin Bridge and would need ramps constructed so that it would be usable by cyclists and people who can’t climb stairs.

Can anyone confirm that THIS is the footbridge mentioned?

I think you’re right, Kevin. It’s the bridge further south east of the Rankin Bridge.
