Bike Pittsburgh needs concerned cyclists to write to SPC and make sure that we are heard while the proposed amendments to the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) are being agreed upon. There are two projects in particular that are of local interest: Widening of a portion of East Carson Street in the South Side, and the Rankin Bridge, which is wide enough to accommodate bike lanes.

Dear SPC:

I am writing to request that cycling and walking safety be considered alongside every project on the regional long-range transportation plan and TIP. When projects occur in the vicinity of known bicycling hotspots, or along major river crossings, the need is even more critical. The need for pedestrian and bicycle accommodation as part of the Rankin Bridge and East Carson Street widening projects should be obvious from the PennDOT Pedestrian and Bicycle Checklists completed for these projects, as well as general knowledge of the project locations and their proximity to known pedestrian and bicycle generators. I encourage SPC and PENNDOT to work with local bicycle advocates and Bike Pittsburgh to ensure the transparency of their multi-modal planning process by making the Planning and Programming and the Final Design Bicycle and Pedestrian Checklists for the Rankin Bridge and East Carson Street widening projects available to the public for review and comment as part of the SPC TIP Amendment public comment process for these projects.

Sincerely,
