Members of a nonprofit bicycle advocacy organization plan to meet Tuesday with city planners and Majestic Star Casino officials to set up a detour around part of the North Shore bike trail, which is closed because of the casino’s construction.
“The casino has given their word they will reopen the trail once the casino is open,” said Scott Bricker, executive director of Bike Pittsburgh. “Because they couldn’t safely keep (the trail) open during construction, they had to close it.”
The casino is expected to open in May 2009.
Since the trail closed last week, “You can’t go from one end of the other without going the wrong way down a one-way street,” said
Greg Broskey, 47, of the North Side. “Someone’s going to get killed down there.”
Broskey said he used the trail three or four times a week, but he hadn’t seen it for a few weeks because he broke his hand. He tried to ride late last week.
Majestic Star General Manager Ed Fasulo was not available for comment.
Bricker said he hopes to have a detour arranged within three weeks.
“It’s full-speed ahead,” Bricker said.

I use the North Shore trail every day to commute to work. Here is my suggestion for a detour:
There is a sidewalk along the construction following the road where Reedsdale meets North Shore Dr. However, there is a 100 yard stretch on North Shore Dr. that isn’t paved even though the space is there for a sidewalk to exist (it is currently filled with big rocks). This requires me to walk my bike down the wrong way of the one-way street as discussed in the article above.
Since there is also a bus stop stranded in the middle of this unpaved sidewalk, it would solve two problems to simply pave that part in and connect it to the existing sidewalk.
