Dr Marcel Just, professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University right here in Pittsburgh, gave testimony at a State House Transportation Committee hearing that illustrated the danger of talking on a cell phone while driving. In an experiment, 29 volunteers wore a magnetic resonance imaging device and listened to sentences while in a simulated driving environment. Dr Just measured significant decrease in brain function.
State Rep. Josh Shapiro, D-Montgomery, who authored the hands-free bill, sparred with Dr. Just, saying his bill would be a step in the right direction.
“It’s just not enough,” Dr. Just responded.
