For several years, there has been a steady increase in local bike racing. After a few year dry spell, we are lucky to have more events, and higher participation at those events. Below is information for those interested in attending races, or attending a clinic to prepare for races.

Bike Racing 101 Clinic, 6.20.09

The Allegheny Cycling Association has enlisted volunteers from a few different organizations  to create a “Bike Racing 101” clinic.  The clinic, for both women and men, is on Saturday June 20th at 10 am.  Experienced racers, along with a professional cycling coach, will present the basics of bicycle racing to all who attended. The cost is $5 or $10(for those without USA cycling licenses) to cover permits, and the liability insurance with the City.  The clinic will be held at the Washington Blvd Cycling Oval, in Highland Park.
More information on the clinic can be found at pghracing.org

Other Resources

For those interested in finding out more about local racing, there are resources available.

  • The Allegheny Cycling Association holds weekly criteriums at the Washington Blvd oval, as well as various other races in the area. The club is coming up on its 40th birthday. The club holds races for juniors, women, beginners, all the way up to hosting a Tour de France winner at Washington Blvd.
  • The Pittsburgh Masters Velo Club holds weekly Friday events at the Washington Blvd oval. The events alternate each week between “fixed gear track bike” events and “individual time trial” events. The time trials are perfect for people who want to test themselves against the clock.
  • WVMBA is for those who like it dirty. The West Virginia Mountain Bike Association holds races all over WV. They are focused primarily on Mountain Bike racing, however they do have a road series. Most races are near Morgantown, however some can be very far south.
  • http://pghracing.org – pghracing has weekly summaries of local races, previews of upcoming races, links to teams and clubs as well as unique calendar with most races within a few hours of driving.

Notable Events This Summer

In addition to the events above, there are a few local races that are noteworthy.

  • Saturday, June 6th is The Tour of Tucker County. Named one of Velo News’ top 10 hardest races in America, it is a road race put on by WVMBA and is a 2.5 hour drive from Pittsburgh.
  • The Riverview Grand Prix is held in downtown Oakmont on Sunday June 7th. It is a criterium style race, meaning a spectator friendly event where racers do short, fast, laps. Races generally last an hour or less.
  • The Renfrew Rás. is a road race in Southern Butler County on Sunday July 12th.

As fall approaches, there will be more mountain bike races and cyclocross races scheduled in the area. The calendar at pghracing.org will be updated as information is released.
