From Mellon Park Bike/Ped Trail Meeting |
Yesterday a group of stakeholders lead by Councilman Bill Peduto (District 8), and comprising of BikePGH, City Planning, East Liberty Development Inc, Walnut Capital and tree tenders met to discuss an important trail which is under construction along Penn Ave in Mellon Park. A major element of the Bakery Row development in East Liberty, this brand new trail is an integral segment of of the bike route network that will connect all the East End parks from Highland Park via Highland Ave and East Liberty Blvd to Mellon Park; and then connect to Frick via Beechwood Blvd, and on to Schenley via Forbes, Wightman, and Beacon.
Everyone at this meeting wants to see the trail finished, and no one wants further damage to be done to the beautiful old trees that line Penn Ave — trees are about to be harmed by Penn Ave being widened for more cars. The group convened on site to walk the alignment of the trail and to talk through our various alternatives. We can’t comment any further as no decision has been reached, but we feel confident we will reach a compromise that will make this trail as safe and convenient as possible while protecting our beautiful trees from suffering any further damage. I would like to see more details on this plan before it becomes a fait accompli. In particular, I am concerned about the proposed “bifurcation” and about the intersections where this trail encounters motorized traffic.
We’re working with the bike/ped coordinator, ELDI and DPW on doing something really cool at the entrances and exits for the trail.
I wouldn’t sweat the bifurcation. Like I said, the compromise will be something we can all live with and be sanguine about.
