Near Mutiny Averted at new Rivers Casino over North Shore Trail access

Casino workers removed the controversial signs today

A near mutiny was brewing this weekend when the brand new Rivers Casino opened their doors, and greeted cyclists with “PRIVATE PROPERTY-PLEASE WALK BICYCLES” signs on the re-opened North Shore Trail.

Casino construction caused a year-long trail hiatus, as well as an inconvenient detour.  This weekend, the trail re-opened, and anxious cyclists flocked to it once again.  Cyclists became incensed by the signs, leading to a flood of 311 calls into the City, as well as the rumblings of a protest.

County Executive Dan Onoroto and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl got involved to rectify the situation.

According to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article on the topic,  “Mr. Ravenstahl took the side of the cyclists(saying),” ‘many folks in the bicycle community are upset, as well they should be, because that trail should be a point where people can continue to bike…I would say that we share the frustration of the cyclist community with that issue.'”

The casino removed the signs, instead installing signs with cautionary language.

Let’s hope this ends the saga, and we don’t see these signs re-appear on the weekends.
