Hosted by the Society for Contemporary Crafts
The most current exhibition at the Society for Contemporary Crafts brings attention to the “Do It Yourself” movement, an ethos cherished by many a bicyclists. The show, DIY: A Revolution in Handicrafts explores issues relating to politics, environmentalism, community, and provokes us to rethink the producer/consumer relationship.
This weekend SCC highlights the strong link between riding your bike and DIY by hosting a Bike Meet-Up at their main gallery space on October 23, from 12 – 4 pm.
Fiber artist and spokepuncher Casey Droge will be in the gallery demonstrating the creation of her amazing, handmade bike accessories, available for sale along with a wealth of other bike-related craft items in the SCC Store. Also meet locally based, internationally famous Dirt Rag magazine. Bike PGH will be on hand to chat about our programs and bike commuting.
It just so happens that the Strip District and Lawrenceville share the 16 62 Design Zone, a joint collaboration by both neighborhoods to bring attention to the district as a local hub for interior design. Lawrenceville is our featured neighborhood this month for Car Free Fridays. If you can, arrive to the SCC car free on Saturday, a little nod and wink to the DIY ideal, but no worries if you can’t, everyone is welcome!
The Society for Contemporary Crafts is located at 2100 Smallman Street in the Strip District.
