Don’t let a little snow keep you off the saddle
It’s official. Winter is upon us, so we thought we’d share some links on our website to help you get prepared for the winter commuting season.
One of our more popular posts over the years is the Thrifty Guide to Winter Commuting. The post include tips on staying warm and making sure your bike has the most useful equipment without dropping a ton of cash. Often you’re told that you’ll need to spend hundreds of dollars in order to even sit on a bike after December 1, but this post gives practical tips for money tight times.
Also, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette published their annual article on winter bike commuting with some great tips from local bike mechanics.
The BikePGH Messageboard is a wealth of information from local cyclists who just love to share what they know. Here are some of the recent winter-themed highlights:
- Locals weigh in on whether there is ever just too much wind to ride a bicycle.
- Can you use zip ties as a cheap replacement for studded tires? Do you even need studded tires? All of your questions answered here.
- Here’s a thread that gives advice on Long Winter Commutes.
- Winter means less day light hours. Here’s a year-long lively conversation on whether one blinky is enough (and are more lights too many?)
- Ever wondered what to do for when you wear a balaclava, but you also wear glasses?
- Or, how about some insight about what to do when there’s a whole lot of fog?
- If you’re cycling less due to the cold, here’s some ideas on alternative winter exercise.
- For the holiday season, here are some gift ideas for that cyclist in your life.
- And finally, if you’ve ever wanted to ride cobblestones in December, Sunday is the 2010 Pittsburgh Roubaix.
Although this isn’t on our site, we thought we’d share what things are like in Copenhagen when it snows.
Check out these great shots on how that city deals with bike infrastructure in the winter on the Copenhaganize blog.
It’s going to be a great winter!
