Bike to Work Day Planning Starts Now

It’s only three months away!

Friday May 20th is an excellent opportunity for you, your co-workers, your neighborhood, and employers to help kick off Car Free Fridays and National Bike to Work Day.  Please help us out by talking with your  employer about hosting a Bike to Work Day event at work, like buying lunch for those who ride their bike. It’s also an excellent time to help organize bikepools for people to share the ride together, and also pair experienced riders with new ones.

BikePGH’s Car Free Fridays program will again launch in conjunction with Bike to Work Day to highlight the soon to launch Car Free Calculator.  The Car Free Calculator will allow individuals to track how they move and how it affects their health, their environment, and their pocket book. It will also tally the combined results of all participants to see how we’re doing as a region.

Two weeks ago we had a kick off planning meeting for anyone interested in attending. We will continue to have these meetings on the third Wednesday of each month leading up to the event. If you want to help be on the planning committee or can volunteer please get in touch with us.

Here are the priorities that emerged from the first meeting:

  1. Bike Advisers — Bridge communication between BikePGH and your employer! Help us encourage your employer to support Bike to Work Day and Car Free Fridays. We’ll provide you with Bike to Work Day/Car Free Friday guide tohelp you and your employer make it happen.
  2. Bikepool leaders — Lead a bikepool from your neighborhood to work.  Lead a bikepool from Market Square back to your neighborhood after the work day is over. Bikepools are like carpools, but by bike instead. It is a great opportunity for new riders or for people who are reluctant to ride on the street to try bike commuting. More riders give you a larger road presence and makes it easier for motorists to see you.
  3. Designer — This event is in need of designs for a logo, posters, and an “I Biked” sticker. BikePGH will provide you with the necessary message, and you can make it into art!
  4. High Profile Person — Do you know someone who can attract some public attention? Perhaps a Steeler or a CEO? Don’t be shy, introduce us.
  5. Discounts — We are looking for restaurants, bars, and shops that are willing to give discounts to Bike to Work Day participants on the day of the event.
  6. Flyer Distributors — Post flyers in your neighborhood shops, your workplace, at the gym, or wherever you see fit!
  7. Commuting 101 Classes, Skills Rides & Bike Inspections – We need to know where there is a need for commuting classes and bike inspections prior to the day of the event.  Let us know if your workplace is interested so that we can schedule some workshops.
  8. Raffle Prizes – Donate a prize for the Bike to Work Day raffle! It doesn’t matter if it’s big or small—your prize will make someone happy!  All Bike to Work Day participants will be eligible for entry into the drawing.
  9. Monthly Planning Meetings 6:30 – 8:30 pm at the BikePGH office 3410 Penn Avenue

  • Wednesday March 16
  • Wednesday April 13
