Car Free Calculator off to a Fast Start

Over 30,000 miles logged

Way to go Pittsburgh!  In just three short weeks over 240 of us have started to tally our miles and we just topped the 30,000 mile mark. So far we’ve burned 1,675,436.78 calories, saved $15,006.47 dollars, and kept 35,775.44 lbs of CO2e out of the atmosphere, and no doubt by the time you read this those numbers will be higher. The Car Free Calculator is part our Car Free Fridays initiative that challenges Pittsburghers not to drive alone to work.

Our first raffle winner was recently drawn. BikePGH member David Troyer grabbed the prize. David had his choice of several items, and he chose the $10 gift certificate to Franktuary downtown. According to David, he was elated to hear that he could splurge on a Locavore with all the fixins, without any remorse. He did report however that his partner was not happy to hear that he chose hot dogs over a month’s worth of yoga classes.  David doesn’t use a cycling computer on his bike, so he feels the Car Free Calculator is a great way for him to track his commuting mileage, plus he supports the work of BikePGH and is happy to add his numbers to help bolster our advocacy efforts.

Some of the things Mr. Troyer loves most about his bike commute is cycling past the BikePGH office every morning.  His easy 6-mile, mostly downhill cruise to work and then crushing the hill on the way home is also something he enjoys very much. “Lastly, and possibly most,” he reflected, “I like the childlike look of never having comprehended commuting to work by bicycle when my coworkers see me arrive on a winter morning.” The fix, most assuredly wasn’t in, but we could hardly have chosen a more fitting winner for the first Car Free Calculator raffle prize. Congratulations David!

If you haven’t signed up for the calculator start here. If you have . . . keep on trackin’! We’ll pick another raffle winner at 35,000 miles. Let’s go Pittsburgh, our time is now!
