Bob and Kit Concilus and their daughter, Marie, would not have attended the Three Rivers Arts Festival on Friday if they had to drive.
When the three Squirrel Hill residents did arrive at the festival on bicycles, they were surprised and pleased to find a bike valet service.
“We just heard about this. You used to have to lock it to a fence,” Bob Concilus said.
Part coat check and part parking lot, the bike valet tent is located at the entrance to Point State Park. The festival runs through the end of this weekend.
“People really like this. The parking lots are all far away and their rates are high. This gets you right here,” said Scott Gibson, who has manned the stand all week with help from volunteers.
Last weekend, about 500 people used the bike valet stand, Gibson said. Monday to Friday another 350 people used it.
“Replacing car trips reduces congestion in the city, decreases carbon dioxide emissions, burns calories and saves riders money,” said Scott Bricker, executive director of Bike Pittsburgh, which operates the bike valet.
