Getting to school the old-fashioned way could make a comeback in Bethel Park, spurred by an idea from two youngsters.
During kindergarten this past year, twins Charlotte and Naomi Nass, 7, were the only students to ride bicycles to and from George Washington Elementary School, located just off the Montour Trail.
Their mother, Shannon Nass, biked alongside them, watching for traffic as they crossed Clifton Road before connecting with the trail.
After they arrived, Mrs. Nass chained the girls’ bikes to a fence in the school parking lot.
When the girls suggested a bike rack would be ideal, their father, Greg Nass, approached American Bridge Manufacturing about fashioning a bike rack out of leftover steel from the J.R. Taylor Memorial Bridge project.
The 210-foot-long trail bridge over Clifton Road is designed to connect walkers and bikers with the Montour Trail, a recreational 45-mile trail that ultimately will extend from Coraopolis to Clairton.
