Allegheny Universal Unitarian Church welcomes bicyclists from near and far for our inaugural Blessing of the Bikes (aka “Biketism”!). Reverend Dave McFarland will be offering the consecration of our cycles, in the hopes of good and safe vibes as we maneuver through our city streets this season. Feel free to drop by for the service on Sunday April 22nd at 10:30am, and be sure to bring your bike, trike, or uni. And please don’t be put off by the “church” part, they are a welcoming congregation where pretty much any religious (or non religious) backgrounds are invited and embraced. Reverend McFarland adds, “Simple acts become spiritual acts. But with very real impacts on the physical world. A “Blessing of the Bikes” isn’t going to guarantee green lights, smooth pavement, and no bad drivers. “Blessing of the Bikes” offers festive a way to bring attention to the practice of little things, highlight the importance of limiting non-renewable energy, foster a communal spirit, and just plain have fun. And sprinkling water (holy or otherwise) on light bulbs just doesn’t seem right,”
The service will held in the Allegheny Commons park in front of the Aviary (on North Str. between Monterey and Resaca in the North Side). If your time is short and you can only swing by for a few minutes, the actual blessing part will take place around 11:15am. There will be light refreshments afterwards.
