Interesting article in the Post-Gazette about accidents involving bicycles and motorists. The article certainly does not absolve bicyclists but states that the biggest category of accidents can be squarely laid on motorists for making careless turns.
Between January 2006 and January, PA Department of Transportation notes 361 reported accidents. The police found the bicyclist repsonsible in over half the incidents, atributing the accidents to a generic “other improper driving actions” offense. Only 1 out of 10 accidents resulted from a bicyclist running a red light or a stop sign.
I am unable to recall any other article or media coverage that uses data to support the belief that motorists are many times responsible for collisions and not giving bicyclists the respect and space mandated under the law. Importantly, data supporting bicyclists belief that motorists are at fault more than believed, is something that can be presented to the police, so they don’t automatically assume the bicyclist is at fault when they roll up on the scene of a collision.
This is a good thing and is yet another sign that Pittsburgh’s bicycle culture is geting bigger and better every day. The future is ours!!! Thanks to Andrew McGill from the PG.
